Someone told me here that peppermint oil placed under the nostril
just a drop per side into the mustache eliminates their extreme
headaches.
If you dont have a mustache just the oil placed at temples
or in tissue and inhaled through nostril will knock the headaches out.
The guy turned me onto almond oil as a base with wintergreen and
ginger oil.
That mix helps with arthritus<sp> If you suffer from pain in wrists hands
or arms this knocks that right out.
I have pain in the hands now and wrists and arm so ive been using this
and it works.
No migraine here but I had a hang over today so bad my hair hurt
so I used some of the oil at my temples and it knocked the pain out
of my head I still feel ran over but at least my head does not hurt.
For those suffering minor pains or major ones try these things
they work.
Happy and healthy new year to everyone

Peppermint oil is harmless. Does it work for migraine? I can tell you in one word: no.
The smell does help with the associated nausea.

nothing short of my prescription migraine medicine will even put a dent in them for me.
This is a homegrown remedy that's been around forever.
Sadly it does nothing for me. Like Platypus, only prescription meds have any effect for my migraines.
The oil does smell nice though. :)

I am in the same unfortunate boat with my migraines.
Fiorinal #3 placed directly in my mouth is the only thing that works for me.

Separating the head from the rest of the body with a very sharp object also helps to stop a migraine. It is a permanaent solution. Guaranteed never to have a migraine again!

Well the man said everyone is different and it may or may not work for each person but I thought id mention it seems most know of this Id never
heard of it being used before.
I know peppermint pills are supposed to relieve acid reflux but
those gave me heartburn go figure.
The wintermint oil mixed with ginger oil does relieve the soreness
in arms wrists hands ect.
Works for me I dont have the migraines thankfully.

Be careful with Wintergreen. It is methyl salicylate and is extremely toxic. Small doses (candy, liniment) are no big deal, but just be aware of potential for harm. It's aspirin's toxic cousin. ymmv........

I haven't had much luck with anything besides 400-600 mg's of Ibuprofen and lot's of water.
Fioranol as a kid, but it's been years since I've taken any narcotics.

Dayum that girl was 17 died 4 days before my birthday
thanks for the tip I dont use alot of it 22 drops of it into large bottle of almond oil and then say 4-6 drops of ginger root oil to accelerate it.
This is mixed into a small shampoo sized bottle of almond oil
and used very sparingly.
I do appreciate the heads up on it though.

My prediction is legal b4 obama is out of office. Seriously though, I have only had one migraine since I started smoking, though I don't smoke but every couple months or less.
Who knows, could be just a post hoc reasoning, but I am sticking with my story :)

Sumatriptan Succinate works wonders. Done with an injector. Gone in 20 mins. Available by prescription only. See your doctor.

The triptan class of medications has definitely been a life changer for those of us that suffer from migraines.

I've tried Maxalt which is supposed to be in the triptan family and it unfortunately didn't help me at all. Is it kind of a trial and error type thing until you find the right med for you? Right now I still combat my headaches with a combination of Alleve and extra strength Tylenol which my primary care doc told me to try many years ago.

It definitely is. Maxalt ended up working for me, but I tried a couple of other medications before that.
Does the combo of Aleve and Extra Strength Tylenol work for you? I have used the Excedrin migraine OTC pills with mixed results. It seemed to depend on the severity of the migraine for me.
Triptans can cause heart problems! Beware! Don't take them "from a friend"!
It definately made my heart race the first time I took Imitrex.

Definitely do not use triptans except under the advice and supervision of an MD.

Yep I dont smoke anymore.......
or any less...
I know for a fact vaporizing helps with pain.
If they legalize and tax it and open it up 21 or over
across the boards like alcohol they will make billions of dollars.
How on earth could that be bad for our economy ?
People will smoke it anyway always have.
They can make the same if not more money legalizing it
then prosecuting and punishing people for it.
Mexico wised up.
We should also legalize hemp it cant hurt a fly
but its impervious to bugs builds the soil
and can provide an oil like diesel to run engines
not to mention textiles.
China wised up
I hope your right and we do legalize and tax it.
address it like tobacco or alcohol.
I think it would save our farmers for the industrial hemp
we could be raising here could prosper.
Beats corn by a long shot according to the crop reports I am seeing.

I tried Excedrin migraine and didn't help. The Alleve/Tylenol combo works most of the time, sometimes it'll knock it out in a couple of hours, sometimes the headache is so bad, it'll linger for a ocuple of days needing repeated doses.

My wife had migraines since she was a child, her mother had them as well. She started drinking more water and we to an acupuncturist; it's been over 7 years and no migraines. And yes she had Doctors look at her, she took Emtrex(sp?) and other meds, they did nothing for them.
I highly recommend at least trying something other than meds.

cool topic. I often get migraines, sometimes once a week specially during the summer with storm pressures. ugh. the worst. once its set, its near impossible to get rid of.
Thinking about seeing a doc, wonder what specialist would be best to start with.
I have heated pads that have some scent to them, they really help aleviate some of the pain for a few at least anyway.

The bitch with migraines is that they are so individual. Caused and cured by so many different things. There am be some consistency but it becomes a serious exercise of trial and error.
But anyone who thinks that peppermint oil is going to solve the problem has never had a migraine. Now a bullet on the other hand...

My wife has suffered from them her whole life. She saw a Naturopath about 10 years ago and after doing an elimination diet discovered it was corn products or corn byproducts ( corn syrup, ect.) She started reading labels avoiding crappy stuff and next to no migraines. Once in a blue moon she gets one and can usually trace it back to something she (shouldn't have) ate.

Holy crap Dave! That's scary as hell!
Wow - old thread!
As an update, I take Celebrex for my shoulder, and was surprised when my regular doctor prescribed it for Migraine. Once I thought about it, I realized that my migraine frequency has gone WAY down since I've been on the Celebrex. Oddly though, I do still seem to get them (less frequently), but without many of the symptoms.

Yeah, it sucks that it happened, and they couldn't explain why. But given that it did, I was pretty lucky in that it had relatively little impact. Just some mild speech trouble and lingering fatigue. The worst part is that I'm in my early 30s and now have to live in fear of this the rest of my life.

Opened a Facebook account a while back and the first person I looked up was my first girlfriend from high school. I'm reading her post on occasion and one really peaked my interest. She saying she has had bad migraines. She says she 's been to the doctors got some tests, MRI's and the like. Little relief. She goes home and starts researching in books and online. She states the common thread in all articles was low magnesium. She goes to follow up visit and asks about what tests they ran. Well they said we did this one and that one, blah blah blah. She asks the doctor and the PA " did you run a test for low magnesium''? Well, no, actually. They ran it and she was severely deficient. An hour after a magnesium IV and she felt like a million bucks. The medical community must be in some global "keep us sick" conspiracy. She found the info. Why didn't they?

If you're not familiar with cluster headaches you might want to read up a bit. A lot of people here are discribing classic migraine symptoms, but there are a few posts that make me wonder if we don't have a few clusterheads as well. I was misdiagnosed with migraines for quite a long time because cluster headache sufferers aren't that common, but an accurate diagnosis will help toward exploring the appropriate treatments for you particular affliction.

I've suffered with them for 20+ years. Drs have prescribed every variety of triptan, Relpax, Axxert, Zomig. I now take Topamax to prevent migraines and that has cut down on the frequency and severity for me.

I get cluster headaches. Been since the early 90's. They are nasty. Sumatriptan (sp) works for me to cut the pain, but leaves me feeling crappy. I know the intention was good, but someone telling me to rub peppermint on my head is just plain silly

Wow! I just spent a good 1/2 hour reading up on this. Interesting stuff. I have an impending Dr. appt. I'll be sure to get his thoughts on this, as he is a migraine sufferer himself.
