I've been looking for my semi-hollow for a while now - I play jazz and want more of a warm/woody tone. I like the look of 335s and some of the Ibanez Artcores (in particular the ags83b (http://www.ibanez.com/HollowBodyGuitars/model-AGS83B)), and prefer humbuckers, though p90s are an option. I don't mind buying used and my budget is 400-800 USD.
However, I am much more comfortable on a Strat or Tele than on a LP, and most semihollows in my pricerange are 24.75" scale length. A nice chunky neck is a plus.
Suggestions - go!

+1 on the Hofner. For a little more money the John Stowel sig model is just a killer guitar.

I tried one of those Hofners. Very interesting instrument. It outclassed some far pricier choices in that store, had a nice feel.
Peerless has one, the Deep Blue Custom or something like that. Not sure where you'd find one. I have the fully hollow thinline Peerless Wizard with 3 P-90s and the long scale. Love how it feels and plays and certainly the scale is one reason why.

I don't think you'll be able to find a starcaster for $400-$800....
I've read good things about Gadow guitars, Occasionally you'll see a classic hollow pop up on ebay or here in the emporium for around $1200 used.

Fender Telecaster Thinline.
The MIM resissues are in your price range and the 1972 version has humbuckers.

There's a red '67 Coronado on Ebay, it's currently at $685 with around 3 hours left.

I said you couldn't find a starcaster for 400-800, I didn't disagree with the cornado.

How about a Hamer SuperPro (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=657230)? The seller is looking for trades which might make it more affordable.

By semi-hollow, I assume you mean a thinline hollow guitar with a block in it.
- Hofner Verythin Classic / Verythin JS / Verythin Evolution
- Verythin Standard - currently out-of-production
- Hamer Superpro/Talladega - I suspect it has more of a chambered solidbody vibe - I haven't played one yet, though.
- Gibson Johnny A - hollow except for a small block under the bridge
- Eastwood Joey Leone
- Yamaha AES1500 - singlecut
- Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean - singlecut, out-of-production
- Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman - singlecut, out-of-production.
- Duesenberg CC and related models
- Fender Starcaster - out-of-production
- Framus Jan Akkerman - out-of-production, more of a chambered solidbody vibe
- Framus AK 1974 - more of a chambered solidbody vibe
- Framus Tennessee Custom - not sure what kind of block, if any
- Framus Hollywood Custom - not sure what kind of block, if any
- a variety of old German semi's from Hoyer, Hopf, Klira, Hofner and more
As far as a $400-800 budget goes, you might be able to find some of these used for $800 (especially the old German ones), but most of them are pricier. FWIW, the current Verythin CT has a 25" scale, I think.

"A nice chunky neck is a plus."
The ones that I KNOW have "step aside, junior", big necks. :
- Hofner Verythin Classic / Verythin JS / Verythin Evolution
- Verythin Standard - currently out-of-production
- Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean - singlecut, out-of-production
- Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman - singlecut, out-of-production.

Heritage had some prototype long scale semi-hollows at the NAMM show. I know they had a long scale 535 (335 style) and at least one other which is escaping me right now. Johnny Hiland kept coming back to the Heritage booth to play the 25 1/2" scale 535 man. Man can that cat play! You can custom order a Heritage with just about any neck carve you want.

- D'Angelico Vestax - NY-DC, NY-SS3, NY-SS3B - solid pressed tops

For what its worth, the Fender Coronados are fantastic guitars. Most of theones I have had, had great necks. very dominent "V" shape. They never get much notice. They weigh less than a strat and are very comfey.

I believe the Coronado is fully hollow, like the Gibson ES-330.

The Crafter SEG-480 has a 25.5 scale length. It is an amazing bang for your buck IMO.

A used Gibson Blueshawk would fit the bill. They have hum-cancelling P90s and longer scale necks.
