View Full Version : Will I regret selling my black face Fender Champ?

So here is my situation, I am looking to get my perfect amp. But I am a little short on cash. Currently I have a Peavey Delta Blues and a 1965 Fender Champ. My goal is to get a Vintage Deluxe reverb or Princeton reverb, so I am definately selling the Peavey, but I am starting to wonder if I really need the the Champ. Here is my situation:

I will play 90% of the time at home, alone
I would like to some day get back into a band situation, but it will be a while
I will live in a house so I can crank it some, but a stack is out of the question
I like at least a touch of reverb
I can get satisfactory cruch, lead, and drive tones from the pedals I have

So basically I want a great sounding amp that sounds good at low levels as well as cranked. Will a Deluxe reverb or Princeton deliver this? and if so, would the champ just be redundant?

I figure if I sell only the peavey, I can probably raise the additional cash to fund a re-issue priceton or deluxe, but if I sell the champ as well I can raise the cash for at least a silver face or perhaps a blackface.

So, would a good priceton or deluxe make the champ redundant or unneeded?

Sell the Peavey and get a Deluxe or Pro Reverb. Both will be loud enough for a band when that time comes. You will regret selling the Champ.I'll never let my '70 Champ go.

I would lose the Champ in a New York minute, get a Princeton. I have all those and a DR and a Vibrolux, my Champ would be the first to go if need be. A Princeton just has alot more depth in comparison to the Champ which sounds like rubber bands on a cigar box IMO....the Champ has its uses dont get me wrong, but if you AB them the Princeton is so much more rich and if you wanted to could make the Princeton sound like a Champ, but Champ will never sound like the Princeton.

If I were you, I'd keep the champ. I sold off my solid state line 6 and epi valve jr to finance my DRRI. While I don't miss the line 6, I do regret selling the VJ. Granted, it was a VJ and not a 65 champ, but the scenario is similar. It's nice to have a tiny tube combo to play around the house and crank at low volume.

Lots of better sounding small amps out there , IMO - if the Champ and Peavey will get you into a PR I say go for it. A great PR is an amazing thing.

I'd keep it - you'll only regret it later if you do sell. These things keep increasing in value - they ain't going to get cheaper!
My favourite is the BF Vibro Champ (of the Champ range).

Best, Pete.

I get 2nd dibs. These are great amps. The Princeton may better fit your needs but the BF Champ will do nothing but grow in value.

Color me generous, but I'll take that little waste of space off your hands for $200...you can thank me later.:beer

Only you can know if you will regret it, but that being said, I've sold lots of great amps over the years to fund something I wanted to try or that fit my needs better. If you do sell it, just make sure you get something that you love equally as much, if not more, and you'll be fine.

If you sell a Blackface Fender to get another Blackface Fender, you'll be fine. If you sell it, and don't get another Blackface Fender, you'll always regret selling it.

Keep the Champ, get an early silverface PR or DR. These sell for considerably less than the blackface versions and are great amps which can be modded to blackface if you really want the exact sound. A Princeton Reverb is great amp, especially if you put a 12" speaker in it, but it might not be enough to cut it at a gig if you have a loud drummer and bass player. Also, keep in mind that the Princeton and the Princeton Reverb are slightly different amps. The reverb channel on the PR is hotter than the normal. The Deluxe Reverb should be ok for just about all gigs unless you have a really heavy-handed drummer and bass player.

Maybe wait to sell it until you NEED a different amp - say you are in a band?

Personally, I'd keep the Peavey Delta Blues. I think they are dam good sounding amps.

I've had several Champs and have never for one minute regretted selling them.

Sell the Champ and put the money in a Deluxe Reverb fund and start saving for a Silverface. While many like the earliest ones, I have a 1978 Deluxe Reverb that I think is great sounding. I wouldn't discount any year of the Siverfaces.

Don't sell it. DO NOT SELL IT.

I have a 66 Champ and 67 Deluxe Reverb. Not redundant at all. Very different tones, IMO. Both never cease to amaze me whenever I play them. Some amps I've owned I didn't like somedays and loved other days, but some just blow me away every time.

I'd suggest building something like this and you can install the chassis inside the piggy when you want it to sound bigger. I had this modded because I wanted a bigger sounding VC. Now you can keep the original cab in the closet and if you ever just want the smaller package you can put the chassis back in the original cab and all is well.By the way you could use either 1x12, 2x10, or a 2x8 like I did in this Red VC piggy. I think this way you'll get the bigger sound and not have the regret later. Here's also the pic of the Blonde VC that was listed here in the amp emporium. These clips should give you an idea of what you can do with the champ you've got without having to sell it. DON'T SELL IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

both a fun amps... but the princeton reverb is the shit and will give you way more flexibility. I try not to sell amps until I have bought the replacement and given it 30 - 45 days. I have fewer regrets that way. i just don't think you can get to know an amp in less time.

+1 That is what I am thinking too, why make a change now until a change is needed.

I sold my '66 BF champ and don't really regret it. I do miss being able to crank the amp and not use drive pedals, but I found I really didn't play with any lower volume.

I have both, a VC and a PR,both blackface. If it came down to one,it would be the Princeton reverb!
