View Full Version : What songs will The Who do at the Super Bowl?

Was thinking about this. So many of their great songs are a little "twisted." Would love to see a medley of "Pictures of Lily," "I'm a Boy," "Happy Jack" etc. Anyway, here are my predictions:

"Pinball Wizard"--A lock.
"Can't Explain"
"Who Are You"--short version.
"My Generation"--do they dare, at their age? I say yes.
"Baba O'Reilly"--would seem like a lock, but no way they are allowed to sing "we're all wasted," at the SB. Maybe they leave that part out.

Any other predictions?

Pinball Wizard
Behind Blue Eyes
Won't Get Fooled Again

Possibly a Tommy Medley (I hope so)

Don't Get Fooled Again

Question who is playing bass & drums now with the Who?

I thought "Won't Get Fooled Again" would be too political for the SB.

Pinball Wizard
Wont get fooled again
Who Are You
My Generation
Baba O'Reilly

All very safe for the Super Bowl, maybe some sort of typical medley, or a guess appearance. Not really looking forward to it, and I like the Who

They surely won't play Squeezebox and Boris the Spider.

They won't play anything off Quadrophenia so I don't care.

A medley, for sure, three or four of these:

Eminence Front
See Me, Feel Me
My Generation
Won't Get Fooled Again

and ending with

Reign O'r Me

But it would be great if Pete could flip the bird at the folks who were trying to keep him out of Florida and have the band play "Do You Think It's Alright/Fiddle About" from Tommy.

Baba O'Riley
Who Are You
Behind Blue Eyes
Won't Get Fooled Again

Don't Get Fooled Again

Question who is playing bass & drums now with the Who?

Pino Palladino is playing bass and Zak Starkey (Ringo's son who was taught by Keith Moon supposedly) is playing drums.

Won't play "Can't get fooled again", because we did, over and over. It's embarrassing!

The Who at Superbowl ??? Really ?? Man, I don't know what to think about that. Is it me or am I wrong thinking it should be a band from USA. Believe me, I love The Who. Something about them doing Super Bowl feels a little funny to me.

"Baba O'Reilly", but they'll change the lyrics a bit to suit the audience, as in "Middle-aged wasteland..."

I think they will make it very keyboard friendly and "laser like". Open with Teenage (baba O) wasteland , into Who are you , The Kids are allright , ending with a short version of Won't get fooled again........

Where have you been? They played games in the UK two years in a row now and a candian city is just waiting for the Bills owner to pass away so they can buy the team. NFL is looking to go world wide for a while now. And it will surely ruin the game.

The most Americana song THE WHO do is Summertime blues. Picture the audience singing Entwhistles part!

Any song used as the intro to a CSI show is pretty much a lock

And speaking of nitpicking, the song is called "Won't Get Fooled Again", not "Don't" or "Can't"

On a Who front, as they are promoting their new Live Best Of by this appearance, anyone check it out yet?
I almost pulled the trigger on itunes last night. Has some solid stuff--some Charlton, some Leeds, etc. The question is, does the world need more live versions of Who classics? (plus I have boots).

PT: "We're kinda doing a mash-up of stuff," he said. "A bit of 'Baba O'Riley,' a bit of 'Pinball Wizard,' a bit of the close of 'Tommy,' a bit of 'Who Are You,' and a bit of 'Won't Get Fooled Again.' "

+1 for Happy Jack but they don't play that at their own gigs these days, so won't happen.

As for My Generation, they played it a few years ago when I saw them at Jones Beach. At one point, Daltrey changed the line to simply "I hope I get old..."

In temrs of Won't Get Fooled Again being too political, I don't think the screeners will even understand it. Remember that one of the most heavily played songs at stadiums was "Born in the USA" and Reagan had it played at the Republican National Convention, never realizing that it was a protest song.

As long as they don't curse and we don't see Pete Townshend's nipple, it should pass the Super Bowl test.

Sort of like people cheering the chorus of "Baba O'Riley" - not exactly the feel good song of the year...

Don't Get Fooled Again

Question who is playing bass & drums now with the Who?

Zak Starkey on drums and that awful guy who plays a P-Bass strung with 20 year old flat wounds thru a wall of 18" subs and no tweeters, while his fingertips are covered with wet sponges and cotton balls.

Since the SB is nothing but commercial hype. The Who will play at the least their pop songs - Who Are You, PW, etc. I have been a 30 yr fan , but I hope Pete and/or Roger don't have a chest choker during the performance! :worried

I actually thought The Uho were washed up many years ago. But their 9-11 benefit concert in NYC was incredible. Perhaps one of their best ever!

Without reading the thread (which I'll do this weekend)..

Odds are 6/5 they'll do:

all three CSI theme songs ;) + 2 more TBA*

maybe Behind Blue Eyes will be one of the others.

maybe My Generation....

Whatever other songs Roger will sound best on. Probably not I Can See For Miles.

*whatever they do will be 'Super Bowl edits', naturally.

I'll answer my own question:) I downloaded the new live best of last night. It's worthy. Veteran Who fans will recognize much of the material (Leeds, Capital Center, Universal Amp, Charlton) but the remastering is stunning, the versions selected are top notch, and it does a nice job representing the career. Set list kind of follows a Who show as well. Listening to Baba O'Reilly as I type. Not my favorite song by a looong stretch, but its clear, powerful and what an ending. Recommended.
