View Full Version : Need recommendation on replacement tuners that don't require boring on LP

Hey all - have a '95 Les Paul Standard with original Klusons on it. I'd like better tuners for it but am unwilling to bore out any holes, want to be able to restore the guitar to stock. Don't care much about price in this case (the priciest tuners don't seem all that expensive). I don't have gold hardware btw - it's a black LP with silver hardware and the greenish Kluson knobs (which I happen to like the looks of!)
What do you recommend? I do know from what I can find through searching that some will say keep the originals and work on the nut instead for tuning issues - but I will say I'm not good at tuning on the fly and anything I can do to help keep my guitar in tune for live shows is worth doing, and I see better tuners as one of the easier options.
But very grateful to listen to all comments.
Thanks!
Phil

no one on here with knowledge about this? I thought this should be an easy one.
Appreciate someone's help!

Didn't like hearing that the problem isn't the tuners at HC? Oh well, it's your money.

Have the nut checked, make sure you wrap your strings around the posts correctly and always tune up to pitch. As posted many times here... the tuners are not the problem most of the time.

I'd like to know the answer to the original question as well. My original tuners were "aged" and I don't like the looks of them. As long as I have to replace them, I'm wondering if there is better hardware than OEM for functionality.

Are you keeping your Klusons lubricated? They need oiled regularly or they stiffen up. Once I learned to care for Klusons, I found I prefer them to Schallers and Grovers - better feel.

I've installed a number of sets of Tonepros-Klusons replacements and really like them. They have models that will fit bolt-bushing tops, or even better their own ferrules and precisely-fit vintage tuners. The gear ratio is great, no slop, and the keystone buttons are snot-butterscotch instead of snot-green. Excellent product!-Eric

+100 on the TonePros Klusons. I have them on three guitars right now and am ordering two more sets. Love 'em.
