hello everybody ¡¡¡ i´m searching for a good gibson guitar, my options are the les paul studio and a SG standard, the reason of just these two guitars is the money,(hope you people understand my reason). A friend is selling me the sg standard for 1,200 dollars (it´s a used guitar, but in perfect shape and sound) and the les paul studio in the downtown store got the price of 1,300 dollars aprox. I´ve been checking some guitar rankings and many guitar players said that the relief holes that the les paul studio got, rest sustain in the guitar and these guys recommend the standards models.

What you guys recommend me to buy¿?¿?

1200 seems a little high for a used SG Standard. They are both great guitars, get the one that speaks to you.

sg standard would be my choice, the neck binding itself makes the guitar better

Yep, NEW sg standard is $1200...

Don't pay that for a used one. Use prices are around $750 - $1000 depending on condition. 1k is still high in my mind for a used one.

Also, used LP studios are available in the sub 1K range as well.

Anyway, definitely play them both as they are very different, as mentioned. LP will have more girth, more 'ping' in the top end, more bottom, more sustain. It's hard to resist the idea of MORE on all these things, but the SG is a great guitar too: more focused, more midrange, warm. Also, the SG has binding. While the studio is sonically equivalent to any Les Paul Standard - the lack of binding kind of screams "budget guitar" in terms of looks. Not a big deal but just putting it out there.

They both feel very different too.

Either can benefit from a pickup swap...

It's going to boil down to the feel of the guitar. The neck on the LP Studio can feel like a baseball bat depending upon the size of your hand. Nice sounding instrument. The SG, also a nice sounding instrument, has a different neck. Both have 12" radius fretboards.

Your friend probably bought his SG when Gibson lost their minds and had the massive price increase on them. You can get a new one for $1200 these days.

Personally I like the 498T/490R combination. Very nice pickups.

If you're going to solo on the instrument and your style uses anything over the 15th fret get the SG.

SG standard, but play it with a strap to make sure you like it. The strap pin location is a bit odd on the SG. LP Studio's have a 50s rounded neck that I don't like.

The OP is in Mexico City, pricing may not be the same there as in the U.S.

Lalo,

As suggested, go play each style guitar to decide which is best for you. You may also want to check used prices on SG's just to verify whether your friends price is fair.

Good luck in your search

I've owned 2 Studios, and they were both excellent guitars in every way. I foolishly sold them when I got my "better" LPs (historics).

The Studio and SG Std are of equal quality, so as the others have said, it boils down to which one you like better.

I currently own 2 SGs, and no studios, so you know where my heart lies! My SG Std is my "go to" gigging guitar. I love mine.

Go to a store an try both out... I think comfort is a HUGE factor in picking out a guitar. I personally could never get comfortable holding an SG. I want to love them too because my favorite album tone came from an SG special into a Hiwatt. But for me, I just can't do it. If both are comfortable for you... see which one "speaks" to you more because you can sound great with both of them.

I bought an SG Standard with coil taps, Burstbuckers 1&3 in white finish with Gibson hard case for $1235.00 + tax at GC about 1 week before XMas. I really like this guitar, the Studio's seemed to have a short, fat neck which I found uncomfortable to play. These SG's were $1499.00 and are now reduced at GC and Musicians Friend down to $1299.00. Anyway $1200.00 seems high priced for a used one.
