View Full Version : Small footprint / big sound speakers for iMac

Hi folks,

I've read lots of good advice about digital cameras and other audio equipment, done a bit of searching on my own with lackluster results, and wonder if I can tap into the experiences of folks here.

I want to add some computer speakers to my family's iMac. Not for recording, rather just to listen to iTunes, etc. The computer is out in the open in my house on a desk, so I'd like something with a small "footprint", i.e., not very obtrusive or gaudy IMO, on the top of that desk. However, I'd like to get some good bass going, too; a subwoofer is therefore totally OK (it'll be somewhat hidden under the desk).

I love the look of the Bose Companion III and, with a tiny test I like the sound. However, at $250 at my local Target I'm somewhat shocked there don't seem to be lesser priced but nearly as good options from other manufacturers (admittedly perhaps my search was too hasty, but nothing was self-evident to me).

Any recommendations?

Not a small footprint but I use M-Audio BX5a studio monitors fed from a Apogee Duet since mine is set up as a Logic Pro DAW. They sound pretty good for $300. If you are doing any music production work " IN THE FUTURE" on your IMac, using small boxy computer speakers don't make much sense to me. IMHO

Agreed. I have a pair KRK Rokit 8s, and while not a small footprint, they sound spectacular for the price.

Sorry, I only use speakers designed specifically for the PC. Well... maybe, in a pinch, I'll use Amiga speakers. :wave

I got an older version of these maybe 10 years ago--just love the sound you get for the price! (Cambridge SoundWorks MicroWorks II)

I recommend looking for negligible stray field (a.k.a. shielded) speakers if you intend to place them anywhere near your computer. I don't think anybody still uses a CRT monitor, but there still is some risk of hard disk data damage.

seriously-check the reviews for audio engine.coming from the likes of writers that test products for stereophile.they test a lot of HIGH end equipment and they were blown away by these little monsters.
p.s.they are shielded.

Thanks for all this feedback, folks! I'm going to spend time checking out every suggestion. Much appreciated.

No more posts from me to avoid bumping my thread, but in case there's more feedback -- thanks in advance!
