View Full Version : What Pedal can make my Plexi sound like a

JVM OD2 channel? It's not just an OD pedal. There's some EQ or voicing differences too.
My home made Plexi clone has a PPIV MV, so I'm getting drive, but not the right flavor. And I want to keep the Plexi drive sound, so it has to be a pedal or two in front.
So far, I've tried an OCD pedal and a Boss GE-7. The OCD may get me there gain wise, but the GE-7 is poo-poo hissy.
Any suggestions for an all in one pedal that'll get me there?

I think selecting the right overdrive pedal can make a big differance. The out of production "Crispy Creme" OD could get that JVM tone or you might try a two stage OD like a Tim before your plexi.

what speakers are you using?

Could you tell me a little more about these? I've heard of the Tim before, but know nothing about either.

As far as speakers, I'm playing thru an old GT-65 loaded JCM-800 1960a. But I've also got an Avatar 2-12 with a V30 and a G12H30.

Yeah, I hear your woes on the GE-7. If you can get where you want to be with the GE-7 and the only problem is the popping and hissing, you could mod the pedal. It's cheap, and fairly easy if you're handy with a soldering iron. Check out this kit:

I had the same exact issues with a GE-7.

An old GT-65 cab is cool but when I think plexi, I think Greenback, its really part of that mojo. The Avatar 2x12 would probably bring on those aggressive mids and top end that is more plexi like.

I would say a different speaker/cab is where you will get the most dramatic tonal shift, it may be easy to try the avatar just to compare with the 1960a with the GT-65, easy enough to do and one thing to consider.

you may have too much drive in OD-2???

Plexi tone is all about medium amounts of drive level and mids and that tone from those amps is had by turning them up, LOUD. Knowing the JVM is a multi chan affair and that OD-2 Chan is the high gain channel, its really beyond plexi territory at that point, Crunch and OD1 are closer and turning them up to very loud levels brings on the plexi kerrang. Adding a pedal to OD-2 will just bring on more un plexi like modern saturation. Hitting the Crunch or OD-1 channel with a booster type pedal maybe even a treble booster with the pedal output cranked not the drive or dist and the master on the amp turned up (preamp turned up to put some fatness in the tone) imo will be more plexi like than anything, more old school OD.

Another hindrance is Master Volume, it is just a different sound but when turned up tend to be more transparent. At lower levels not so much.

The crunch channel has the standard preamp topology of gain first, tone second; so in green mode it’s like the legendary Plexi but with a bit more gain. Switching to orange mode makes it tonally similar to a JCM800 (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-JCM800-2203-Vintage-Series-100W-Tube-Head?sku=482713). Switching to red ups the gain more, so that the amp performs like an 800 on steroids.

A plexi channel with more gain, cool!

hi mike i have first hand exp w this.

I have a ppimv 50 watt plexi and my other guitarist has a jvm halfstack

my wampler triple recto pedal gets me very close to his od2 chan

the od2 channel is really just high gain with the right freq of mids cut

ge7 and ocd will get you close (i have those exact two pedals too) but not all the way there.

i run the wampler triple recto into bottom bass input (gain around 3) jumper to bottom treble input (gain around 5-6) and use master from there.

the thing you have to remember is that the plexi likes to do its own thing. this will get you close but something i have learned about my amp over the past few years is that it is difficult to dial out the plexi mid sound...and its not a bad thing just different than a jvm

Which mode? OD-G? OD-O?

Running a RC Booster into your Plexi and tweaking the controls should help your Plexi sound more like the OD-O. I have both amps and a RC Booster.
