View Full Version : Securing Tele Volume Knob?

The volume knob on my Mexican Tele keeps loosening up. It's a knurled set-screw type knob on a round metal shaft pot. I tighten the setscrew, it stays tight for a gig or two, then loosens up so that the knob spins rather than turning the shaft. I've considered using a little locktite on it, or filing the shaft a little so it's a little more like a D-shaft. I've considered putting a wrap of electrical tape around the shaft to give the knob something to bite into. I don't know for sure that any of these will work, or won't cause some unforeseen problems.
Anyone have any hints or suggestions?

You could try a little clear nail polish on the threads. That holds well enough in many situations but is easy to break when you need to back out the screw.

My CS tele does the same thing on both volume or tone. I do a lot of swells, and if the pot shaft freezes, the knob comes right off. It was fine for the first few years, but the knobs just are crap, I hate 'em. I replaced the pot on mine with the split type and use a strat knob. Looks better, feels better and stays put!

bag the little straight-slot screw for a hex screw. this will let you use an angled allen wrench with a lot more torque than a tiny screwdriver.
