Is there a resonator that you would recommend for under $900 ?

I bought a Johnson tricone in '06 that - after cone and bridge upgrades - I'm quite happy with. They don't seem to offer a tricone model anymore and I don't know what their prices are like now. At the time I paid 7-something I believe.

I think you'll just have to find em and play them and see what works for you. If you've ever played a genuine National, you know there's nothing that sounds like that. Maybe a genuine vintage Dobro. Or a Continental Tricone. but any of those are WAY over $900.

A lot of the cheaper ones sound really tinny. Johnsons aren't all that bad, especially if you change out the cone(s). Just don't expect too much, unless you get really lucky.

I've heard good things about the Beard. I thought they were more expensive.

Check out these guys:

Republic Guitars (http://www.republicguitars.com/)

I got one of their tri-cones, and I'm pretty happy with it.

My Hohner HR400 is awesome, but they may have been discontinued. You didn't specify whether you wanted a metal or wood body, but if you visit Elderly Instruments online, you should find something in your price range that isn't a Regal or Johnson. Beards are nice, Republics are okay.
