Someone on this forum sentenced me to a lifetime of blues jams. Actually no great hardship since on mondays at the Elm Tree, Surbition (London, England) you get to play with folks who've toured with Clapton, Buddy Whittington etc. This is me struggling to keep up with Paul Rose who is a past winner of the Guitarist of the Year (UK) award.

I'm the miserable old git on the sceen right with the black strat. The reason I look so miserable is because I'd just put on some heavier guage strings and forgot to add extra springs to bring the action back down... result no audible fast hammered-on notes... Paul called this slow blues to help me out.

Anyway it's worth watching for the effortless way Paul Rose can pull out a whole huge bag of tricks quietly and cleanly... it's "eat you heart out" time for most players.

Funny. I liked your solo better.

What was he thinking?

Gotta go with Stu Blue on that one. It's the blues....you don't have to play Eddie Van Halen licks in there. It's not the Olympics. Substance over speed.

Nice one Stu! Your playing and tone were really nice. I guess your wrist is OK now?
I know Paul, he is a very good player but he goes for tricks and pyrotechnics more then emotions and feel. Probably that’s why he is not as successful as he deserves.
Cheers
Doc.

Thanx guys. (Very unexpected comments on my playing!)

Pickmaster: The wrist (CTS) is the same. The hospital put off the operation for a year because it got a little better by itself and they know I have a terrible history of things going wrong, infections, bleedings... a simple broken leg had me in and out for 3+ years.... The wrist still goes dead if I play for much more than half an hour. So 20 minutes at a jam is just right for me at the moment.

Paul can do the soulful thing, he'd already done a very pure version of Peter Green's "I loved another woman" that night. It's fairly well known that Paul spent more than a few years lost in the rock wilderness of excess, and it's good to see him back together again. He's on a eat right, no booze, no drugs, road running path now.

Paul was using a borrowed Peavey Classic 50. I've seen him since with his own amps, Cornford 50 and a Ruby Riot, and he was more melodic with them. Also bear in mind that out of the 250ish people there on that video at least 75 were guitarists whooping it up everytime he pulled out a trick or two.... and that was his last number ( you know, pull out all the stops time).

Great clip! I liked this one.... Stu, you definately hang. I kind of agree with Pickmaster about Paul. He is a monster but can be a little schizo, at least for me on this clip. I like the kitchen sink, but not neccessarily on my blues...

He is a beast and I'd love to see him live some day. Or jam.... Sumthin like that ;)

Agree with all the above.
Fine playing Stu. Of course some very impressive playing from Paul. What actually impressed me most about his playing was his time. Outrageous.

Tap solo in blues ?? oo - wouldn't do it myself but god damn, I wish I could pull that out of the bag at will anyway.

.

Woody: That's what impressed me too. Having tricks is one thing, being able to play them in perfect time is quite another, but Paul even keeps the flow of the feel going too. Actually , during Paul's solo, I did a little fluff and lost the feel ( at 3.36 on the video... the sharp-eared drummer snapped me back in almost instantaneously), and Paul rode it as if it was all pre-arranged. Playing 2nd guitar to him was just a matter of going with the flow...

Given some of the comments here I would recommend listening to Paul's soulful gentle side the tracks "Home" www.myspace.com/101696319 "Loss" www.myspace.com/101696319 and "No Spark No Fire" www.myspace.com/101696319

:rockin Hey hi Paul... welcome to TGP BTW. (You get complaints about Clapton's tone here sometimes, so.......) Looking forward to seeing you again down here at the Elm tree. The guy who sometimes videos those jams always complains i hide out of sight stage left (way past my view by date at 64) and that's the only one where he "got" me. If you've got a CD with that "Home" track on it, bring me down a copy to buy when you come...pretty please.

on the whole very good !! but less widdling/tapping would have kept with the flavour of the song

Stu

I'll gladly bring a CD down, no probs. I'm just waiting for Mark to give me a date.

As for the vid, it was midnight, it was the last number in a pub blues jam and I thought I'd give it a bit of twiddle to end things off. If I played like that all the time I'd have retired thru bordam a long time ago.

See you soon Stu.

Hope you were not offended with my comments Paul, or thought I was out of line.....

I was talking about makling a cohesive statement. Not in any way downplaying your skills!

http://img.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon7.gif I don't know about awesome... That was my old "65 strat through a bog standard Marshall 1936 cab. The amp was a THD Bi-valve (NOS Phillips 12AX7s and Mullard EL34s). It is unusual; a real class A 30watts (NOT AB1 like an AC30) you can mix and match output valves ie:EL34 and 6L6 (it's twice a single ended type) or just run one very low out put 6G6. It's pretty much designed to produce power section dirt, won't do Fender cleans, but it nearly always sounds good in a band mix regardless of who's playing it or how they've set it (at jams).

Actually I take my old "60s JTM45 top out more often, because I'd had it 35 years, but the THD is equally touch sensitive, but chalk and cheese different in tone.

I see this point-after Stu's solo, I couldn't see the placement of all the tapping. Great player though-he'd dust me off the planet easily.

Aslo, Stu-that solo was nothing to be ashamed about-nice!

I don't usually like tapping but that was good, didn't go on too long and got back into normal playing fairly seamlessly.

I agree. Tapping doesn't work here. Im not sure you dont mean it to, but it just sounds like you're trying to show off. I found the other guy's solo much more "masculine" and constructive to the track. jmho

Hi all, I'm new on this board too, and I've got to say Stu you are a brave man getting up on stage with Paul, fair play to you mate!

I have seen Paul on a number of occasions and his touch and tone is always stunning, no matter what gear he plays through.

For me the best demo of his skills is on the Santo and Johnny "Sleepwalk" cover that always makes what little hair I have stand on its end - a breathtaking display of light and shade.

If you can get Paul over to the US you will have a real treat, as he is a nice bloke and you might pick up a lick or two in the bargain.:)

Actually I always find it easier getting up with "hot" players than dealing with some of the more dodgy semi-pros... but then I'm a "listener" with a "keep-the-groove-going-at all-costs" attitude. For me what matters is whether the band is cooking or not... I'm not bothered if the other guy (like Paul) is light years ahead of me as a player as long as there's a "feel" for me to get my teeth into. At that jam, sometimes I'm the best player up there, sometimes I'm the worst... :band
