Where the marshalls used in the studio or just for live use? I know that JP used a variety of amps in the studio, but where the marshalls ever used, and if so, can anyone tell me what tunes they're used on? Thanks guys.

Several songs of II, III, IV and Houses.

All or most of Physical Graffiti, Presence and In Through. Several on Coda, depending on the year of the actual recording.

Achilles' Last Stand, Trampled underfoot, Nobody's fault but mine, In the Evening, Custard Pie, all of those sound like Marshall to me.

I read somewhere that most of the time he used a small Wilco amp, made specifically for him, in the studio

Most of IV sounds like it was recorded direct.

I had read that he used a Tele or Braodcaster into a BF Princeton Reverb, at least for solo in Stairway and I think Whole Lotta Love. You probably can't trust everything that you read, though

Tons of AC30 and Strats on Presence. I have achieved a very convincing Stairway solo with a Tele and Supro tube rectified Thunderbolt.

In an interview John Paul Jones stated that when the future members of LZ got together to jam for the time in a studio/building Page was renting, Page had all kinds of amps lining the walls, including Marshall. If you think about it, it seems unlikely that Clapton, Green, and Taylor could acquire a Marshall amp in the mid-60's, but Page could not. More than likely Page just preferred the sound of the Supro over Marshall. There is really no telling what Page used on some of the LZ recordings.

Near the bottom he says that Bring It On Home and the solo for Heartbreaker were some of the first songs he played through a Marshall.

No I'm pretty sure he used the various Tech 21 Character Series pedals.

When all is said and done, the only folks who will ever know...if they can remember...are Jimmy, JPJ, and Plant. We can opine and intuit until the cows come home...but there's a ton of misinformation out there...much of it intentional ;)

Without good studio notes, it's unlikely that even Page remembers exactly what got used where. I can't tell you consistently which guitars and amps were used on which tracks of things I recorded last year!

If his studio method is anything like mine, he started with a sound in his head, and a good idea of which guitar/amp/mic combos would get it, and then tested and dialed in from there, maybe swapping components to get closer to his vision. When I'm recording, I don't usually think "I'm going to use this particular piece of gear", I think "I'm going to try to get this particular sound, and this gear will get me in the ballpark".

Besides the gear he probably brought along, remember that Page was tracking in fabulous professional studios that probably had their own collection of guitars and amps to choose from, amps the engineers there knew and trusted.

This also reminds me of a story Bill Bruford tells of one of his more famous studio drum sounds...

19) What was that great cymbal on the Red album by King Crimson?

The cymbal was featured on "One More Red Nightmare" from King Crimson's "Red" album, and has quietly become a legend. I found it in the rehearsal room trash can, deposited there by the group in the room before us. It was turned up on one side in an effort to get it to fit in the bin, like an Australian bush hat; it had definitely seen better days. It was a "foreign made" Zilco Standard cymbal imported into the UK by Arbiter Co. Ltd., and, before you ask, I have no idea what happened to Zilco. Anyway, it's maltreatment had bequeathed it this fabulous trashy sound with a very short, fast decay. It looked so sad; I took pity on it and we fell in love. I used it for about a year or so before it split, and the end came swiftly after that.

I remember bringing Bill in for a film score overdub at Abbey Road. Simmons had just introduced their brand new "Simmons Drums"--a set of trigger pads triggering a cheesy synth module. Today it would be a complete joke. Bill had never seen such a thing before and went crazy on em, he had a ball and sounded amazing. What an incredibly nice and considerate man. He could play a bit as well.
