People always talk about best bang for buck guitars. Here are a couple of my favorites. By the way most of the ones I'm about to list will be used to be under $1000

Fender Special and American Standard Used, New 400-1000
Carvin Custom Built guitars Used, New 300-1000
Hamer Guitars Used, 200-1000
Gibson Les Paul, SG, Melody Maker Used, New 400-1000
Custom Built Guitars, Small Luthiers Used, New 200-1000

So can you think of any US or Custom built guitars for under 1000?

Another great place to check is ebay. I saw a custom built TelePaul with 3 humbuckers and a bigsby for 565 dollars!

I think the best deals can be with partscasters constructed with good components. The only problem is that you never know what you are getting, because they don't always come together well.

Gibson Faded SG's and Les Pauls.
Gibson SG Classic.
You might be able to score a Charvel San Dimas for less than 1k.

I already have a nice LP historic or two ...

but I'm still tempted to get one of the LP Studio Vintage Mahogany guitars .. new $799 .... if I ever see a used one in decent shape it will probably come home with me.

+1 on the G&L and the Hamers. No way can the Fenders or Gibsons come close to these in quality.

Almost any major brand can be had for under $1000 used.

Washburns and Peaveys can be very inexpensive used - $200-300 for their USA models is not at all unusual.

Some Campbell American guitars sell for right around or right under $1000 used; and they seem like a lot of guitar for the money when so priced.

Washburn custom shop...mine is an Idol I68. Definitely hangs on the side by side comparison with my LP. Think i paid $800 or so used. Beautiful and built like a tank. Pickups are SD 59s if I recall. It's the same as their I568; i think they shut down the custom shop once the company was purchased, except for maybe Boogie Street still gets them.

Some used Ernie Ball from time to time, and the new Charvel San Dimas guitars.
Fender is also making some great stuff.

G&L should have been at the top of the list!

And don't forget Peavey. You can buy 4-5 USA Peaveys used sometimes for $1000 :)

Carvin Bolts NEW and Bolt Plusses NEW are way under 1000.

So are the Carvin neck thrus like DC 135, DC127, DC 145, St 300 all under 1000. NEW but of course with fancy quilt tops etc. could be over- but the basic guitar even with a premium Mahogany Body will be under a grand.

Fender American Standard Tele or Strat. Can't really go wrong there. Just make sure you play the one you want because even though they are a factory built guitar, they are all different in my opinion.

Also, I am really liking the American Special Tele w/ the factory Texas Special PUs. I think it is a pretty good deal for what you are getting... but no HSC.

US Masters is a really obscure brand. I LOVE mine. They have a couple models under a grand made in USA here (http://www.usmasters.com/under1000.htm). I've never seen one used. That's either because there are so few of them or because we who own them won't part with them. Mine is the most stable guitar I've ever owned.

Tons of US made guits under $1,000, especially used as noted above. My US guitars purchased for under $1,000:

'08 Tele Am Dlx Ash: $650 used, $130 for Lollar 52Ts to replace the stock SCNs and she's a peach
'74 Guild S-100c: $500 off Clist, but can be found for $800 or so
'73 Guild BluesBird: $700 off Clist
'05 Gibson SG Classic: $950 new from MF ($850 for guitar, $100 for hsc)
'00 US Standard Strat loaded with Fralin '54s in G&G tweed case: $700 off Clist
'83 Peavey T-60: $225 off CList
Heritage H140 goldtop: $600 shipped of eBay
'77 Guild S-300-D: $525 off CList

G&Ls are a great call as well.

They're on EBAY for $699 with free shipping also (for those of us who don't have any available locally).

I need a second guitar and am seriously considering picking on up.

I didn't really think about it before, but I have three US made guitars, all bought for under $1,000, all under $800, even.
-02 Fender Highway One Strat (It is much different than the current Highway Ones--more like an American Series with Classic Series electronics and a simple finish).
-08 Martin 000-15
-95 Hamer Artist

Lowel. Aaron sells his SG clones for under $800 shipped.

If you can find one, a 79 hamer sunburst for $1k is just about as good as it gets. Happens sometimes with a bit of luck!
I'd have to put the PRS CE22 on my list. Best PRS IMHO. Tend to go for $1k on ebay.

Fender just released the "American Special" series to replace the Highway 1 lineup. These are $799 at GC, Sam Ash or Best Buy. It's a good deal for a brand new MIA product. BUT... you can now find blowout deals on Highway 1's that are still in stock. I'm seeing them at GC for $599, get 'em while they last!

Another vote for the Charvel US Production Models here. Normally just over $1000, but there are still those style 2 Tele models selling on closeouts of $700 which is a steal IMO.
