View Full Version : The Skin Pimp Tone Bender MKI is KILLER!

I just got back from my 1st practice with the MKI. I had the ability to compare it directly to a D*A*M MKII. I know they aren't the same pedal but the MKI (with the volume at 10:00) cut and snarled through the set while the D*A*M though tone-ly amazing couldn't cut through with the volume maxed. Bottom line: I'd love to record with the D*A*M MKII but play out with the Skinpimp MKI.
The MKI has a fuller and more open voice than the MKII but doesn't clean up nearly as well (or really at all) BUT, there's no need to roll the guitar's volume back to make the MKI open up so it get's points there.
It (as well as the D*A*M) are very quiet but the gate effect of the MKI makes it quieter. The vibe is quite similar to a Buzzaround clone that a friend made (in tone and vibe) but the Buzzaround is smoother than the MKI which seems to bridge the gap between the MKII and the Buzzaround.
FWIW: I can get a very similar tone from my Basic Audio Gnarly Fuzz to the SP MKI (with the BA Gnarly being fuller (more bass) and more versatile (varied great and different tones along the texture knob) but the SP MKI just seems to work so well for my situation.
I've been on the ultimate fuzz search for a while now and learned a lot each step of the way. I'm not sure if the SP MKI is the be all end all for me (is there ever?) but it's damn close.
Thanks to Rob (jhx) for the MKI and jazzandmetal? and Martin for turning me on to Skin Pimp. This pedal's a beaut!

Cool, your getting what you're looking for...nice!
Interesting how the MK-I and the Gnarly Fuzz compare,
especially since Gnarly is silicon. Dunb luck?

It's pretty amazing really.
I don't think it's dumb luck at all because ALL the silicon pedals I've gotten from you sound and feel like Germanium.
You've managed to put that same volatility into the Silicon fuzzes (that I've tried) of yours.:beer

Ryan's MKI is killer. I prefer mine over my JMI.

What is different from the JMI? Just curious.

A touch more gain and clarity. A lot less noise and much more temperature stable.

Cool. I don't need more gain, don't know about clarity... Less noise is a definite plus, though!

Yeah, mine's as quiet as that D*A*M MKII (even more so, really).

It's just barely a touch more gain and clarity. Unless you had them side by side, you'd probably only notice the lack of hiss with the Skin Pimp.

Having trouble finding info like pricing etc. Is it via a thread here?

What does the toggle switch on yours do?
I got an OC81M loaded MKI from Ryan in January...a fat temperamental bitch she is!
One of the best fuzzes I have.
As for getting one, try Analoghaven or call Ryan direct. His details are in the massive Skinpimp thread a few times.

The switch adds a resistor to the input. So one setting has a little more sizzle and upper mid content the other (which I prefer) has less gain, less sizzle and is more velro-y.
As for finding one, I know that Analoghaven sez they have on in stock...

Scratch that- HAD one in stock...
I got another MK I , the one pictured in this post I had to sell when my Mom was dying of brain cancer, for a plane ticket to FLA. I swore I would get another , it has the same Graphic the Not of this Earth, and a trio of OC 84,s it, just minus the switch on top. Thanks to succor for making it possible. It,s killer!!Sounding, cuts through mix perfectly. Ryan makes some of the best fuzz,s out there. This the one I got from succor.
