Just spent a pleasant 30 minutes checking out Arlen Roth performance clips on Youtube. He's known mostly for the Hot Licks teaching vids, but damn that man can play! One of the finest Tele stylists there is. I don't know how to link it, but check out his solo take on Georgia and House of the Rising Sun on Live from my Living Room, Richeray's Youtube series of having name players come and play his 52 Tele. Great stuff.

+1 I think the Hot Licks connection ( as great as it is)
has diverted attention from Arlens own individual skills
as a killer player. When he has dueted on the vids he
always takes the back seat on rhythm and lets the guest
take lead. But he knows his stuff. Very humble.

just saw arlen the other night. the man can work a guitar like no other! had a great 4 piece band, arlen, bass, drums, and fellow tgp'er matt rae on 2nd guitar. matt also plays a smoking tele as arlen was kind enough to give him some space. a legend who unfortunately doesn't always get the attention he deserves, arlen is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. (as is rich who i also met the other night). make sure you catch him live if you ever get the chance.

btw- if you don't have the cd "toolin around", i recommend it. arlen has a slew of great players as guests. his new cd with levon helm is also generating a great deal of chatter.

He use to be the Fender guy with his buddy Danny Gatton but now he is a Gibson spokesman.. I Wonder what s the story behind this change.

A great player , a great teacher and sensitive human being , he is ..

Damn straight. I haven't thought about him in a while, but I'm always a big fan. Had a couple of his albums back in the early '80s, absolutely loved his playing and also his song choices. Saw him perform back in '84 - great gig.

I downloaded "Toolin' Around" several weeks ago and it's really good. Arlen is one of the most important people through his "Hot Licks" videos in providing quality instructional materials featuring high profile players. The column that Arlen did in "Guitar Player" was excellent. In fact, I wish they would bring it back.

Yes,,, Arlen is the man. Got one of the "learn slide guitar" books, back in the '70s, that had a plastic record in it of Arlens playing, which I wore out, trying to learn the licks,,,,,Yeah,,, he's one cool cat.

An absolutely GREAT disc! The opening track alone "Somewhere in the West" is worth the cost of the whole disc. This CD is just way too cool...HIGHLY recommended listening!

Arlen's "Playing in a 3 piece band" is a great instructional DVD for those who want to learn how to blend rhythm and lead playing

I've probably "borrowed" more licks from Arlen than anyone else

Michael, your father did business with Hyman Roth, your father respected Hyman Roth.... but he never trusted Hyman Roth.

Arlen's a tremendous person. A few years back I traded him some guitars for this rare 63 Wildcat with factory 360 hp "Super Wildcat" 425ci engine! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/DAT12/Automobiles/wildcat13.jpg

Although I've never listened to one of his solo CDs, Arlen Roth is probably more responsible for my lead guitar style than anyone. When I first started playing, back in '86 or '87, I bought a copy of Arlen Roth's Complete Electric Guitar. I recently found a used copy and realized how many of my licks, and use of pentatonics and stuff came from that book.

Great book for beginners and it's available from Amazon for only $1.99 used: http://www.amazon.com/Arlen-Roths-Complete-Electric-Guitar/dp/0385176201

Glad to see so many positive responses, I think he's a great player,a cool guy, and reading his blogs on the new Gibson sponsored site, he has some great stories to tell, stuff that's good to know. Thank you Arlen for sharing with us.

I've really only been aware of him in the past but that House of the Rising Sun video has me interested in learning some of his style and digging up some of his music.
