...and coil splitting suggestions. (Posted this on BaM, but got no answers...)

I'm planning on a pickup swap for my HB Spruce w/ Piezo...There are PRS options like the SC245's, and Starlas...but being a DiMarzio guy for all my life, y really want to give them a shot with the Air Classics.

Instead of wanting more pronounced mids, like most PRS pups, I want the complete opposite...I want a mid scoop, and looking at DiMarzio's website the only ones with that EQ spec, are the Air Classics, the EJ's and the Steve Special which I've used on my main guitar for nearly 10 years, but it is a high gain pickup.

With that comes the Coil splitting, I really dont want another switch on my guitar...and I know a Push/Pull is not possible with the Piezo getting in the way. So, I gave it some thought and remembered a 3 way switch that Ibanez used on their John Petrucci model.

This one:

You can make any 3 combinations you can think of with that thing...I know it won't give me all the splitting options available, but it will give me the only one I'm looking for.

The only thing that worries me is that if the hole is the same size as the switch.

Thanks!!!

Well, I'm not sure if these match your desires, but I put a set of WCR American Steele pups in my HB spruce/piezo. I wanted to include coil splitting, which would be a simple toggle (DPDT), but I've yet to summon the courage to pop a hole in the top for such a switch. That said, the WCR pups really brought this ax to life. You can email Jim and tell him what you want and he'll set you up.

Now, actually doing the swap........ I elected to NOT pull the electronics out the pup cut and I just cut the leads near the opening and spliced the new pup leads in. Not as elegant as pulling everything, but I just couldn't stomach the hassle.

Hey, someone has an HB Spruce (w. 57/80's no less!) for sale on BAM and it has BOTH piezo AND the push pull tone pot for splitting. Not sure how it was done, but you might want to check on it.

Someone else posted a link to a discrete switch that's part of the pickup mounting ring and gives you series, parallel, or split:

Thanks Betos, I really have to ask him how he did it...even PRS themselves add a switch when you ask for coil splitting in an HB.

I'll check those bluesdoc, Thanks!!!
