I watched the movie "The music man" last night and it
dawned on me that Shirley Jones may have been the most talented
actress in the history of motion pictures.
her ability to bring a motion picture to a pivotal turning point with her voice is without parallel.
there is a moment in the movie Oklahoma
where she breaks into a song called "Many a new day" -
which she sings to such perfection -that it is starling.
again in the Music Man her singing in the song - "till there was you"
superb !
match that with her looks and acting - who has ever been better ?

she also played the prostitute Lula Baines in the movie "Elmer Gantry"... a little out of character, but was amazing in that role, for which she won the academy award for best supporting actress

If I could have been born 20 years earlier in Hollywood I would have been hot on the trail of Shirley Jones and Suzanne Pleshette. They both were gorgeous, talented women that seemed to have a great sense of humor. And class.
Shirley has/had entirely too much talent to be so good looking. It really wasn't fair. Without "enhancements".

My mom babysat for a young Shirley Jones . The Jones family owned and operated a brewery in south western Pa .
Used to be Stoney Jones' Beer . Is now produced under the name of Stoney's . I have a Stoney's beer tray that was given to my mom by Shirley Jones . Real classy lady .

Anne Hathaway is one of the few natural talents in Hollywood these days.

I have nothing to add other than:
I always found Shirley Jones rather attractive, but Suzanne Pleshette IMHO was in a whole 'nother league... :drool

I had always it would be good to learn "Till There Was You" after hearing her sing it in The Music Man. One day I saw it in my Beatles book.
Thanks Shirley!

Nice to see this, as I see Shirley (and Marty) at our neighborhood dog park a few times a month. She is a very nice "down to earth" lady. Not Hollywood.

In the "for whatever it's worth" department, I used to work in a Hardware Store in the town where Jack Cassidy, Shirley Jones, and kids lived for a time. Jack and Shirley were regular customers. Shirley was fairly nice and had a good sense of humor, but Jack was a little on the arrogant side, to say the least. Same town where Stan Getz, Julie LaRosa and Ted Mack lived (Irvington, NY). I also worked as a delivery boy for the local pharmacy where the Getz family were customers. I used to get a kick out of telling people that "I deliver drugs to Stan Getz"!
