Isn't that an old video of Scott Lerner? Jeez, his playing has gone south since those days. :D

Yeah, but his tone sucks.
Just kidding, of course (see another thread)...wow, high five young man!

Yeah, I wish... Whoever that was was killin' it! Most likely the kid, but who knows with the completely disconnected sound and video. Pretty prodigious effort here!

That's fantastic. It's not just that he's able to hang, but the timing is there even when he makes mistakes, and he sounds connected to the phrasing. I mean he could've rehearsed a bunch of licks and throwing them in there, and it would be impressive for a 13 year old, but it seems beyond that.

So are you saying you are skeptical?? :aok I think it is real fwiw. His fingers kind of look like he is playing. But why can't they post a better vid?? It is 2010!
There are a bunch of other vids up of him. Waiting for some to load (at work...)

Even in 2010 only the newest iPhone 3GS offers full 30fps video capture. My iPhone 3G is only 15fps. Its a ridiculous state of affairs I tell you!
BTW, to the OP, please NEVER post something like this again. All it does is piss me off! :D Kinda like that 9 year old kid playing Scarified by Racer-X. I can only hope that the kids with prodigious talent develop complexes because of it and never get any farther than youtube. Thats what helps me sleep at night!
(of course I am KIDDING! I think it's awesome and I am totally jealous!)

Not this Kid!
I wasn't that good at 13... hell, I'm not that good now.
I'm afraid to see how good this kid gets... (the one in the video that is) :)

I first heard about this kid on the electro-music forum, of all places.
I doubt they have access to affordable video cameras in Slovakia, but I could be wrong: http://www.andreasvarady.com/
He's a Gypsy. What a shocker... (google "Birelli Lagrene", "Django Reinhart", etc.).

what about the 10,000 hours theory with this kid?
He was born a Gypsy. That's all we need to know.
They're notorious for playing guitar like normal people breathe. Legend has it they start playing guitar as soon as they pop out of the womb.

The good: Really nice playing; especially for a 13 year old.
The bad: In a few years, when he sees all his friends getting the chicks and all he gets is props from guys on TGP, he'll realize that he actually should have spent his time learning Nickleback songs.

here's his bio from his website...
About Andreas...
Born in Slovakia, into a Gypsy family, the exceptionally talented Andreas Varady has been playing the guitar since the age of four. Although only twelve years old, he is already an accomplished, imaginative musician, inspired by his favourite guitarists George Benson, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. Taught by his guitarist father Bandi, Andreas plays completely by ear, and since moving to Ireland with his family in 2008 has gained much experience through busking and attending Limerick's weekly jazz workshop.
Andreas recently performed on RTE's 'The Guitar', and, following his popularity on the internet, and performances at the Cork Jazz Festival, has been invited to play at many international festivals this year, including Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter Festival, Derry Jazz Festival and Brecon Jazz Festival. Irish drumming star David Lyttle will be featuring Andreas throughout the year, both in his own band and in his 'Jazz Juniors' educational project, and also playing in Andreas' quartet. He describes him as 'immensely talented and already very advanced, with an exciting future'.

If that's all improv and it seems like it is then this is clearly a young genius we're looking at and it's actually very exciting. It'll be fun to see where he goes.

That would only be a problem if he moved to the US. As long as he stays in Europe, he will be fine.
Only in Europe did I see two young hot blondes yelling "I love you John!" to MMWS (Martin Medeski Wood Scofield) as they played a killer set.

Friggin' awesome. As everyone has pointed out, great natural feel and timing. I sincerely hope this kid maintains his passion as he gets older and doesn't burn out too early on something he's clearly got the gift for.

Yeaaa...That jazz/blues clip was to much. And there is no doubt that's him playing. Five minute straight of fantastic ideas that flow out of him like it's a endless bag of tricks. Awesome is a under statement ! I wonder how he would do at Guitar Centers King Of The Blues Contest ! haha

When I watch kids like this, play I have a hard time picturing them sitting down with a metronome and practicing their arpeggios and scales over changes for hours and hours. The amount of practice and discipline needed to achieve this level of playing is enormous. For some reason I was always imagine them picking up the guitar for the very first time and just blowing through every change you throw at them. I know that isn't the case, but it's more believable to me than a 9 year old kid patiently working on his technique for 6 hours a day.
Love his playing btw.

Up until this last year, I'd wonder if he stood a chance at all based on your assessment of his talent. But Kirby Kelly won this last go around, so I have restored faith in the contest.

He's an East European Gypsy kid growing up in Ireland. You can't really compare him to the typical American kid, regarding maturity and stuff like that.
