Hi - I'm very close to buying an Einstein at the mo', but just thought I'd ask: when people say it has a 'great' clean channel, does that mean a great sound in itself or a great sound for a hi gain amp? How would the clean and slightly dirty compare with a good Fender?

I guess I'm searching for something that'll do everything...

Hi,
I've owned two Einsteins. The first I had modded with the Tubelit Roadie which gave footswitchable access to the Ch1 modes. The second was stock.

While I liked the Einstein a lot it I couldn't get it to work for me. I loved the mode 3 on Ch1 and would rather have had the clean on Ch1 and mode 3 on Ch2. Channel 2 to me is too dark and compressed.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for....I wanted a great clean and an awesome Marshall tone..not a good clean (Einstein) and a pretty good Marshall tone and then some other tones that I didn't dig as much.

The clean is NOT a fender clean and not a plexi clean either. It's pretty clean but not crystal clear and not that bright. The Einstein is not a bright sounding but a rather dark sounding amp. It can do a lot but not everything. Seems to get a great clean on Ch1 then the really good mode 3 on Ch1 is compromised to a degree as they share all the same controls.

It depends on what you what. If you want Fender clean/Marshall Gain I'd look at the CAA PT50-100, the 20th Anniv Ecstacy, or better yet the Bogner Fish....awesome Marshall/Brown tones and a killer clean channel.

thanks - that's interesting 'cos I don't actually need the sounds to be instantly available at the flick of a switch - I can cope with tweaking between diff sounds - just as long as they're available in the box itself. but it still doesn't totally sound like they are? shame, cos I thought I'd finally found something genuinely 'flexible'...

I owned two Einsteins and I personally thought the clean tones are awesome. I wish they made an amp that had all three modes in Channel 1 available on a footswitch and no Channel 2 at all. Channel 2 sounded good and I got it ALMOST dialed in to sound just like Channel 1/mode 3, but in the end, I still preferred Channel 1/mode 3 the best.

You're likely going to find varying opinions on this amp, but IMO, it's a killer amp that can cover any style. I have a few videos on YouTube demo'ing the different tones.

Well I think the Einstein actually can sound a little like a Fender...:messedup
I replaced the V1 with a NOS JAN 5751 wich takes a little bit "Hi-Fi`ness" from the amp and the V3 with a TAD 7025 to get Ch1 more Vintage sounding.
Now the clean sound has a little more "sparkle" and "chime" with less compression.
Ch2 gives an awesome Brown Sound but with more low mids. I use a Wampler Pinnacle for Marshall like tones with more hi-midrange.
Diezel`s actually work really well with Vintage 30s because they are very dark sounding and low-midrange orientated...the hi-mid spike of the V30s complements that.
The "slightly dirty" sounds (ch1 mode 2) are not that good in my opinion and lacking a bit in character...
I boost that mode with a Keeley Java Boost for bluesy stuff an it also works well with a MP Mighty Red Distortion and the Wampler for 80s Rock and Metal.

I think if I throw out the EMG`s out of my Eclipse I`m gonna like that channel a lot more...a set of Motor City Detroiters are on their way to me :banana

+1! I currently use an Einstein 100 watt head as my main gigging amp. I had the mod done which allows the modes on Channel 1 to be foot switched. It's a fairly easy mod and inexpensive at $50. Although the footswitch cost slightly over $100.

I've actually picked up an amp gizmo and plan to use the Einstein with my M13 will allow me to switch among all modes and channels using the m13 which makes the Einstein even more versatile.

The biggest complaint with the Einstein mod is that the volume of the modes is difficult to balance. I think you can find a "sweet spot" with the gain and channel volume knobs which will allow you to get close. A lot of folks manage this using FX units in the loop as well.

It is a killer amp and the cleans are great period (IMO)! As Thump suggested, it covers a ton of ground, and is incredibly versatile, especially with the channel 1 mod.

Good luck!
