Who digs this? Man I heard a story this was Jimmy Page's favorite from back in the day so I bought a record that night and have been hooked ever since.

Savage stuff. Those guys sound like they stopped at the truck stop and found some bennies on the way to Memphis.

I dig it very much. Every track that sounds like it has Grady Martin playing the guitar is exceptional.

He never got credit for all the great playing on those records.

Didn't Paul Burlison play guitar in that group?

Paul Burlison was the man. There's a great reissue CD on Bear Family (I think) that has all the essential tracks and great sound.

Definitely a must buy for any rockabilly fan or Telecaster fanatic!

To my knowledge Johnny is not related to T Bone Burnette.

Billy Burnette is related to Johnny; he had his own rockabilly band in the 80s and then played guitar with Fleetwood Mac for a while, if I recall.

Love 'em! The primal screams that Johnny lets out...heard it was because at a gig once he backed up into Paul's lit cigarette! Paul may have played live, but I think it was Grady on the records.

Here's an interesting link discussing Paul and Grady:

Yeah the Telecaster really shines on this stuff. Total Fender all the way. This is so American, I love it.

TwoGeez - the guitarist on those great vids you posted was, IMO:

Rock Therapy = Grady Martin (studio cut)
Hound Dog - Paul Burlison (live cut)
Lonesome Train = Grady Martin (studio cut)

Cheers

Really interesting thread. I always loved the Johnny Burnette records. Never realized Grady Martin was a ringer on some of those session.

He did the gigs.

Grady did the recordings that everyone knows and loves.

I'm a huge Rock n Roll Trio fan and have been for many years. Johnny and Dorsey were talented guys. For pure wild-ass country boy rockabilly no one could top them (although Johnny Carroll could get pretty wild as well).

50's Rockabilly is such a great genre. It's so deep that you could get lost in it for years and still not hear 10% of what was recorded on hundreds no-name labels spread across the US and beyond.

My all time favorite though will always be a rather obvious choice: Carl Perkins. there was a pure-ness, an authenticity about him, that made me feel that he was the real deal right down to his blue suede shoes. Great singer, great song writer, great guitar player. Arguably, one of the first if not the first rockabilly cat there was.
