View Full Version : Looking for a compressor

I was hoping I could get some help with selecting an inexpensive compressor. I am not familiar with the use of these pedals and really not sure if its what I need. It depends on the day, but at times the sound of my tone when I practice my leads sounds like its missing something, compared to when I'm chunking out riffs. Not sure if I'm clear enough in explaining that, but I think maybe I could use a compressor. I would be looking for something under
$ 100 if thats possible. Anything in the Boss, BBE, MXR, DOD realm is what I'm thinking, I just can't afford a Keeley or boutique compressors. Thanks to all that can help. Also, do you place compressors at the beginning of the chain, or end? And I would imagine the most would just leave the compressor on all the time????? Not sure? Thanks again

Compression is a funny word. Yes there are great compressors that can add a little something that's missing in the clean tones. That something is midrange, the natural thing that happens when most compressors are engaged is the bass and treble are "leveled" a bit and the mids come up to match their level. Great sound.
That said, compressors can be set a tad aggressively for that squashed attack sound that is favored in clean tele country lead work. Funk players sometimes really squash the tone for a very even strum sound. This type thing is an effect type use of the comp. Also a great sound.
Lastly, i should add that often what players desire is an "amplike" overdrive/clean boost, to push the single notes more like the chords volume and roar. I have used a lot of them and the trick then is to find what feels natural and rich sounding to you. This can easily replace what missing when you change gears from chords to single notes. This overdrive and distortion is another form of "compression", very reminiscent of a great tube amp slamming a quality set of speakers, also another form of "compression".
So far I like the EP Booster, MI Audio Blues Pro, and still looking.
I have also tried a number comps and the most transparent i have tried is the Demeter. I just don't want the effect anymore, as i have a great tube amp slammin some good speakers and some good drives.

If you can find a BBE Orange Squash (or the older version Main Squeeze, same pedal but they changed the name), you will have a great compressor that works well at any setting of the controls (unlike some pedals like the DynaComp that have a slower attack at higher sensitivity settings, that causes pumping of the volume). I think that would be a good one for someone who has never used a compressor before. And they are pretty inexpensive and true bypass. BBE also has the new Bench Press, which is based on the Ross compressor, but it is new and I haven't been able to try it yet.
That is my suggestion!

By law all mail orders need to allow 30 days for returns, so that's our actual policy. we just don't like to encourage free pedal rentals ;)

Double :jo I wish I knew that.
Is that a law for stores based in CT or for all in the US?
