View Full Version : Wampler Analog Echo or Cmatmods Deeelay?

Hi guys,
I intend to replace my Deja Vu Delay(great pedal but it died on me suddenly) with one of the abovementioned delays. I do play in two bands that play classic rock/blues-rock and modern rock. Which of these two would fit the bill better? I know for classic rock, not a lot of us use delay but I realized I need it for small rooms that are dead sounding else my sound is just too dry for the average listener.
Another question is will the Analog Echo, with its tone control, be able to approximate the brighter frequencies(based on the demos I've seen and I had the early 1st ver deeelay) of the Deeelay?
I know a lot of guys here are in favor of analog delays(yes, i do know that the wampler also has a digital chip in a circuit that emulates analog) but when in my experience, they don't always cut specially with heavy riffing. They usually are good for single note soloing but doesn't go well with everything else in a band context. So what I'm looking for is really a cross between the clarity of a digital delay with about 50% warmth of an analog delay. I just intend to use it as a slapback to thicken things up ala joe bonamassa, EJ, and paul gilbert.
Thanks,
Edgie

Well, I use a Wampler Faux Tape Echo for that hi-gain VH/YJM type stuff and it works great. I guess the FTE is the same circuit as the AE but with an added modulation feature. From what clips Ive heard the Deeelay sounds great too, Im sure both of them will do the job just fine.
A cheaper but equally great solution would be to get the Ibanez DE7 an use it in Echo mode. Really really great delay tones out of that one, perfect for thickening.

I have a CMATMODS Deeelay on my pedalboard. I bought it used & I really like this pedal ALOT! I'm totally satisfied. My delay needs are met.
Good Luck
There was a thread on this a while back: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=485759&highlight=wamper+echo+deeelay
Hope this helps

The Deeelay has a great slapback sound. There's a video on YouTube where a guy compares the slapback on his Deeelay to an old Way Huge Aqua Puss, and to me the Deeelay wins because it has more delay time.

Thanks for the replies.
jazzfromhell, I had that ibanez de-7 years ago. It does sound good but I don't like what its buffer does to my tone when it's on.
JEMT, thanks for the link. I saw that thread before but I guess I'm looking for more opinions since the longest review seems to be a guy who's intention is to do U2 stuff when it comes to delays. I'm determining which is the better always-on delay for riffing and soloing.

do you have room for a dd20? i know it's not on your short list. . . . but it WILL get you EXACTLY where you want to be. . . .

I think the Malekko 616 has plenty of cut for an analog delay - it excels at slapback stuff too.

Yes, i saw that too and I also think that the Deeelay wins for its price and the extra length of delay time. It's not in a band setting though that's why I still need feedback on how it compares to the AE in such case.:)

I don't have space for it as I'm only using a pedaltrain mini now. Also, it would be an overkill for what I intend to use it for. I also would want to be able to run my pedals with batteries eventhough most delays consume lots of power(5-6 hours of Energizer(or similar) battery life is fine with me) because in the venues where we play, there are no guarantees that there will always be a an extra socket for effects.
One more thing is I don't like the buffer circuit in boss pedals.

Thanks for the suggestion erksin, but i've done some read ups on it and if i'm not mistaken it's somewhat akin to a skreddy echo in terms of dirt in repeats(please correct me if i'm wrong). After reading several threads I learned that there are actually two "types" of analog delays: clean but with rounded off repeats and ones with dirty, decaying repeats. I think I need the former as what I have learned from having the Duncan Deja Vu.
It's also not readily available here in Singapore unlike the AE and deeelay so testing may not be possible. There is a dealer here but I'm not sure when will he have a stock of the 616. I do think though that it's work checking out when it's on stock specially now that they seem to have resolved the problems that people are complaining about.
