I started writing a thread about....something that could be considered political. I was all worked up and was just about to post it when I realized it was political and came to my senses.
:FM Whew that was close.

It's a shame there's not a single forum on all the internets where you can talk politics.

Irony is the fact that the places where they can/do talk politics most of us wouldn't want to spend any time. Try the finance.yahoo.com message board for FNM or C. Wretched hives of scum and villainy.
ETA: To be clear, I am very grateful that TGP policy keeps this place from devolving to those levels.

My goodness, Scott and Brian have grown powerful indeed if they've managed to rid the entire interwebz of political discussion.

I used to wish we could talk politics here because I naively thought most of us would have something in common being musicians and such. To my surprise there are a few from the other side present.
So it's prolly best to keep it out all together...win for everyone :)

There is a political forum on Gearslutz where you can argue to your hearts content. I wasted a few months of my life getting sucked into the noise there before coming to my senses.
Once you realize you wouldn't engage with the same people over and over in real life, you realize how absurd it is to do it online!

Lol, I know, I know.

Bingo.
And it really wasn't a hard core political topic.
But it did involve the FCC. And while that's not normally a time bomb of a topic, it would have probably cratered into a mess eventually.
I am still not happy about the subject. But then I also have a view to another thread in which two particular people are just begging to be called out for what they are.
First time I've ever considered crossing the line knowing I'll get hit with points. (lol, does premeditation carry a harsher penalty?)

My experience is that people want to talk about politics with people they agree with.
What they rarely want to do or are incapable of, is talk/debate politics in unemotional, fact-based discussions with people they disagree with.
It's a subject charged with too much emotion.
People in families can rarely do it.
Friends can rarely do it.
Watch tv, and you can't even find it being done by talking heads and/or politicians.
Why would anyone expect it could be done on the anonymous internet?

I know a gear forum with a religious political area. They moderate it heavily with strict enforcement of the rules. No name calling. Nothing personal. Just facts. No warnings on the name calling. Its where I do my venting.

It was a set time "suspension", not a ban. Some folks have a hard time telling the difference between the two...

There are certain Big Issue topics that I'd love to hear some learned opinions about. Like the trade imbalance with China. Solar energy. Democracy (ahem) in the Middle East. A huge number of subjects about history.
I read up on this stuff but on a good forum you can always find someone who's been there, has experience and some interesting notions.
The sad thing is... you can't risk it anymore. At least not on a music forum, or really any general interest forum. I actually looked around once for a history forum but didn't see one that really piqued my interest.

Like many of you I once sought an outlet for my frustration with things political on internet forums. A complete waste of time, breath and blood pressure. It is good to have passion about matters which affect our lives and freedom. Now I go directly to the websites of my congressional representatives and senators and let them know exactly what I think of their work. I have attended county commisioners meetings and try to apply my civic concerns where they might actually get results. Practicing your politics at a local level can be most effective. Preaching your politics on the internet is ...............

It's not an everyday thing for me. The strict rules here are a comfort actually; no real gray area, no wondering if maybe something is ok. I know some threads have bordered on the political and live a full and natural life. But for me, it's just been easier to steer clear. Well, until this thread. :-)

Just use PMs, or does "called out" mean it has to be done publicly? Sometimes people can benefit from some direct exposure to what another person thinks of their statements/opinions, as long as it is done with tact (if it's done as a personal attack, that wont work at all).
I reckon premeditation would carry a harsher penalty. It just makes it a bit worse if you've thought about something, decided that you shouldn't do it, and then gone and done it anyway! :hide2

I consciously stayed away from political posts in that thread. I was banned after I made another thread about the thread, which had no political talk in it. I just assumed the mods wanted to punish me for the second thread

Political Stew (http://s270114120.onlinehome.us/bb/index.php)
The wretched remains of the former Talk Politics branch of the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree travel forums, which itself was banished to the wilderness by Lonely Planet Corp. after a few years
Very lightly moderated. Curse to your heart's content but be aware that your credibility is generally in inverse proportion to the amount of your swearing. One credible link backing your position is worth a thousand rants......
Membership is roughly 50% USAnians, most of the rest are from the EU and Oz. At least a couple of South Americans that I'm aware of, plus a few assorted folks from Africa, Indian subcontinent, and the MiddleEast. From hard-Right to hard-Left and many points in between. The usual demographic skew towards office workers, but enough intelligent Blue-collar types to provide a good counterpoint when economic questions are in play
Talk Politics branch is exactly that
Streeterville is the equivalent of the Pub
Israel-Palestine has its own separate branch for reasons which will become obvious after reading a few threads there....
For the long and tortured history of who they are and how they got to this point, browse around the Famous Dishes branch, starting with "25 years of fixing air conditioners"
