View Full Version : How many of you use 10s on both your Standard and Eb Guitars?

I'm considering this and wanted to see if some of you tried it but couldn't get along with the different feel. I need to bring two guitars to my gigs...one in flat tuning and the other in standard tuning. The standard tuning gets the most work. I bought a new Les Paul Standard to be my flat tuned guitar. It was going to replace a Reverend Daredevil. I used 11s on the Rev and use 10s on my standard guitars. I've tried to use the 11s on the Les Paul but I was having all sorts of issues with it staying in tune. It would come out very quickly going mostly flat and sometimes sharp. I went through filing the old nut and getting a new nut put on the Les Paul by a reputable tech so I'd like to think it wasn't the nut. However, I put 10s on the guitar and first tuned standard with good results. I then went flat and it did even better holding the tuning. The thing is, I do notice the slinkiness as they probably equate to 9s now. Sooo.....for those of you that decided to use 10s on all of your standard and flat tuned guitars, how did you get along with the change in feel especially during a gig? Did that bug you enough to switch back or go heavier on the string guage?

depends on scale length as well for me. here's a quick rundown:
Ibanez 25.5 - 11's - CGCFAD
Gibson LP 24.75 - 12's - CGCFAD
Fender strat/tele 25.5 - 9's - standard
Gibson LP 24.75 - 10's - standard/Drop D
well, that's what works best for me anyway. i've got a pretty light touch, so i can get away with lower action and lighter strings on longer scales.
that's from quite a few years of experimentation and trying new things and taking others' advice. usually i won't try out a new string gauge before a gig. i'll give it a practice or two to see how it settles in and plays before i commit. overall, i HAVE noticed that the shorter scales have a problem hanging with larger strings at standard pitch. it has more to do with physics than anything, though i guess cranking up the tension on your machineheads could help...

You said something interesting in that last point. I was wondering if better tuners could help the Les Paul with the 11s. I am tuning a half step down on that but the guitar just didn't like it. So I either have to live with 10s tuned down a half step or move this one to a standard tuned and set up something else for Eb 11s. My Reverend Daredevil held the 11s in Eb very well. It has a graphite nut and locking tuners.

I have always used .10's...both tuned down 1/2 step and in standard tuning.
I have never had a problem in either tuning or on any guitar...Les Pauls, SGs, Strats, Teles, Gretsches, Charvels with Floyd Roses...etc.
If your guitar is set up really well...no binding at the nut...good tight tuners...strings stretched out well & put on correctly...No problem.
