Neophyte direct recording question for ProTools

I'm a neophyte when it comes to direct tracking. Is the Palmer the same thing as a Hot Plate? Can / do you use both?

I understand the Hot Plate concept (thanks to Orren's excellent article) but I'm looking into quality speaker simulation only that's ProTools compatible. The RTAS plugs mentioned in the article either got low marks on speaker simulation or didn't offer speaker-only option.

I'd prefer a RTAS plug as I'm not into the VST wrapper yet. I'm concerned that it will eat processer power and have latency that'll make me want to kill someone, like Direct Connect.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I did some direct recording recently with a direct box from Behringer called a GI-100. It's purported to simulate a 4x12. I've also tried using a SansAmp thing as well, both of them jacked in from the 'recording out' of my Twintone.

Both sounded pretty good, but not quite as 'full' as the real deal, even the real deal through a 1x12.

Dunno about the Palmer thing though!

The Palmer cab sim is as good as it gets. I use the PDI-09 on almost every guitar part I record. I also have a Digital Music Systems Cab-Tone, which is also very good, but not so much as the Palmer.

I'm not familiar with the article you're referring to, but plugins would have nothing to do with what simulating the tone of a cabinet, or I should say that they would be unnecessary. The Palmer is a hardware device that is inserted into your guitar signal chain just BEFORE ProTools.

It seems they are similar and can both be used for attenuator and direct-in recording - although the Hot plate can only be used for direct recording if you have a cab sim hardware (like the palmer or the groove tubes SE) or cab sim software (such as

So Palmer makes two versions, one that takes a line level and one that takes speaker level. Therefore, please tell me if this is right:

The line level version would be used as a speaker sim in conjunction with a Hot Plate.

The speaker level version would be used instead of a Hot Plate,in other words it's a combination load box and speaker sim.

I believe so, but check with Ed D, as he has used both, besides actually making the HotPlate himself with THD :cool: .
