Anyone every drop in the Lollar pickguard and p90 assembly into their 60s MelodyMaker? Thoughts?

I'm considering going that way...

I personally have not but would love to hear the results, can't imagine it would not sound great

Agree that risk for any Lollar item seems low. Would like to hear any love in general for the non sg melodymakers? Anyone?

Not a Melody Maker and not a Lollar...

I have a 65 Epiphone Olympic- I guess it would be the equivalent to a Melody Maker- same body depth and same pickup.

I had it routed for a Seymour Duncan Custom P-90.

You can see how much wood (bridge side) that had to be removed.

I've not tried it but am thinking of going that route. I just want a freakin fat necked p90 guitar that doesn't break the bank so I'm thinking of picking up a M.M. and a loaded pickguard from Lollar. I'm betting you've already seen it but just in case, check out this video from the man himself:

Indeed I did. I love the fact that his beard keeps entering the frame...I just took mine off and totally regret it. But I hate the fact that he installs it, restrings it, and then does NOT give it a test blast! Arrrgh!
What a tease!:crazyguy

Nice hot rod!

I'd love to hear good MM clips...those on ytube are just too low quality to be of much value.

A plank of mahogany into a good amp. Hard to miss.

Interesting that he points out that the pickguard assembly will not retrofit to a reissue type of Melody Maker.

Does anyone know if the routing on the MM reissue pickup is shaped correctly to accept the specially shaped Lollar P-90 we see here without extensive mods? Don't mind making a spare MM reissue pickguard then reshaping it to suit this special P 90 but I'm not keen on doing additional routing on the body itself.

Anyone? Much obliged.

I had a 1960 last year that I put a Lollar P90 in. It was the P90 that he makes to fit without routing: Lollar Melody Maker P90 (http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=262&Category_Code=misc-single-coil-pickups). I had a chance to compare that guitar with a friends Gibson USA Jr and another friend's Historic Jr. The MM killed the USA JR which sounded very mid-heavy and muddy. The Lollar pickup has lots of clarity and is not muddy or overly conjested at all. Next to the Historic Jr, it was hard to choose a winner. Both sounded great. Unfortunately, I had to part with that guitar.

But I picked up another 1960 this year and I'm thinking about putting a P90 in it. This time I'm thinking about routing it for a soapbar rather than going with the MM version. I didn't like the look of the uncovered P90. Since this one has already been modded by someone else, I'm not concerned about making further mods to it. Still undecided....

No, the pickup will not fit in the reissue without a small amount of routing.

See this thread for some pics I posted of the routing I did with a reissue melody maker for a humbucker, and then later I changed it to a dog-ear P90:

I say mod that reissue and don't give it a second thought. They are a great platform for mods IMO.

Thanks, Eric.

Not placing my reissue on a pedestal or anything. Instead, it is that white finish and I'm liable to strip and refin the whole thing if I get started routing and so forth.

THAT's what I am scared of. :aok

Got it.

The least Gibson could have done is to use some grain filler before putting the white paint on it.... as it is, the reissues aren't even finished well enough to use the white paint as primer. I really liked the playability of the reissue I had, but the "finish" is crap on these.

While I didnt have lollar p90s,I had 2 50s gibson p-90s on an old 59 I think single cut MM. I wish I still had it. It killed. I do have a heritage h-137dc with the lollars on I love it. It is shaped like a dc mm but thick like a junior.
