I am wondering how these react to different style cabinets. I have a pair on the way (the same pair I used back in the 80's). I do not yet have a cab for them... curious how they sound in open and/or closed?

Fender used to offer the JBLs as an up-grade in many of their models of combo (open back) amps,,and also put them in several of the closed back extension cabs. They seem to sound great in both apps.
JBL used them in many of their Hi-Fi cabs,(ported), as well as in sealed cabs, (moniters) etc. Don't think you could go wrong either way.
It would just be your personal preference, spatial/airy, or tight/focused.

It also depends on what you are driving them with. If it is a low watt amp a open back might be prefferable. They sound great in a closed back, but it takes a few more [75-100] watts to get the sound out of the box, so to speak.

I'd be driving them with 30 - 50 watts... definitely not 100 watts. I plan to pair them with an 1987 lead, bf bassman, bandmaster and Route 66 to see how they sound.

If you have a combo amp you could use as a speaker cab to get an idea of the open back sound?
