Yes. It took a few tries, I kept trying the obvious then thought about it a bit and figured it out.

Same here. I'm going to get back to it though. It intrigues me..

edit: I got it with another 10 minutes of trying.
hint- make 1 pattern with half of the queens on half the board and different pattern on the other half of the board with the other half of the queens

That was my strategy but I can't get more than 7. I'll try again later.

Ok I'm being stupid here, been trying this for 10 mins and can't figure it out. I was thinking the fast guy must need to keep bringing the lantern back, is this not the case?

Not really ... you have to keep in mind the time they need to cross the bridge so you can pair them efficiently.

Here's how I did it:
1. Fast guy + black guy: they are the fastest. This way you have a fast one to come back with the lantern when 2 slow ones go on the other side.
2. Fast guy comes back.
3. The ladies cross: they're the slowest.
4. Black guy comes back.
5. Fast guy and suit guy.
6. Fast guy comes back.
7. Fast guy and the black guy.

yeh good one.

For some reason I got stuck with the idea that the quick guy always had to bring the lantern back, so that you lost the minimum time. Even though I recognized the fact that the two slowest crossing together would save you time, Doh!

Chess one was easy though ;-)
