I am curious about what else is available out there for single coil pups other than the usual suspects. Any pickups that have really distinctively unique tones that can't be copped with the main types?

Mosrites that The Ventures used were really hot like 13K and used super thin wire, they sound great played through a cranked blonde Fender

The old Gibson made P-35 "Kleenex Box" pups used in old Kays like the Jazz II are awesome, which are replicated by SD: http://www.sdpickups.com/specialty.shtml

A couple favorites of mine:

Jerry Jones lipstick p/us
Dearmond 2k pickups, as in the Dearmond M-75T. Looks Dynasonic, but is more P90 like.
The white p/us in my Yamaha SGV800. Like the 2ks, these are more than a little P90 like. Some of the best sounding single coils I ever heard, in middle position.

Yes. lipsticks! Bright and clear as any pickup ever. With their metal casing they are self shielded and pretty hum resistant too.
Lace Sensors are "new tech" noise reduced single coils- nice pups with a wide variety of oomph to chose from.

G&L's Magnetic Field Design Z-coil pickups - a nice cross between a standard single coil and a P-90 that has almost no noise.

I had an ASAT Z-3 and the range of tones from these pickups is incredible.

So I am curious if people can talk about what these pickups sound like and maybe recorded references if possible. I've only played strat, Tele, and P90 types and the EMG single coils that are in a humbucker housing.

Well, here is a vid demo'ing the earlier mentioned Pig 90's:

And I have the Kleenex Box pups in my Kay Jazz II, and there is a vid of that sound here:

Rickenbacker toaster and high-gain pickups.

+1...

obviously known for their bright, jangly tone... but they're capable of so much more.

they handle overdrive really well, with a good clear bite through the grain.

Mosrite single coil pickups were based on P90 pickups. With that being said, I've played a Mosrite with single coil pickups. Its kind of hard for me to describe how the pickups sound, I haven't played a Gibson style P90 so I can't compare. Here's some sound examples instead. I'm sure Ricky used a Mosrite for Rock Lobster, It sounds like it.

Dirty tone...

I really like the lipstick pickups in my late 1950s/early 1960s Silvertones and Danelectros. I am also quite fond of the single coil pickups in my 1964 Gretsch Double Anniversary, 1967 Fender Bronco, and 1976 Jazzmaster. I also dig the DeArmonds in my Martin F-55.

I looked. Do they have a single coil pickup that isn't a strat, tele, or P-90 type?
