Is it possible to convert a 1x12 cab to a head cab?

I may end up with an empty Soldano Astroverb cabinet and I was wondering how difficult it might be to cut it down to the dimensions of a head cabinet for the same chassis. I don't have the tools or expertise, but a neighbor of mine is wood worker/carpenter with experience building cabinets (finger joints, etc.)...he could probably help me out.

Has anyone done this with success? Would the whole cabinet need to be re-covered?

I'd keep the combo cab and have your neighboor build you a head cab from scratch. That way if you decide you don't like the amp, or it doesn't fir your needs, you haven't killed the resale vaule. Just a thought.

I recall seeing threads that where some folks had converted a Fender combo (SCXD?) to a head and ran it through a 2x10 or 2x12 cabinet...

If the combo cab is in excellent (like new) shape, I'd be willing to make you a custom black taurus tolex head cab in trade for the combo cab - you can see examples on my web site at moonguitaramps.com, and on photobucket, under jaxmoons04 (or search photobucket for 'Talon amp').

The head would have to be upside-down from the typical Soldano head (with the controls on top and tubes hanging down), so your controls won't be upside down.

I would move the Soldano logo up, and mount it over black grill cloth on the bottom front of the head, so it looks like the cab you have now, but with the bottom chopped off and moved up.

..or have your friend make one for you - it's really not that hard - it would be a shame to cut down the existing cab though - more work than it's worth IMO to get it to look right, and as mentioned, your resale value would be shot, not smart since Soldanos hold their value so well.
