View Full Version : Opinions on wearing cologne?

I haven't worn cologne in many, many years since high school. I've never had much interest in it. However, my girlfriend just started selling Mary Kay as a hobby (mostly for the discount on makeup). She got a few men's items as part of her inventory. I don't have much interest in dropping $8 for a bar of soap or $10 for shaving cream. She does have a bottle of cologne she'd sell me for cost plus tax (like $20). I don't know if I'd wear it much, but I would like to support her. I'm not sure about cologne, though...

Any opinions on men wearing cologne? Does it make a difference if it's a very light one spritz of a lighter smelling cologne?

The only people I know that wear cologne are smokers. Maybe it's a coincidence.

I really don't have strong feelings about it one way or the other, as long as it is subtle. I don't want to smell a man a mile away. But a man that smells good can only be a win-win I'd think. Especially if he is as charming as the Old Spice Guy in the commercials that are currently running. He's a hoot! :)

Some women like it, some don't. My wife absolutely hates it, so i don't wear it. There's a guy in my office that must bathe in the stuff. He's a sales guy and the boss had to give him a little talk.

I wear it if I'm dressing up. Such as if the wife and I are going out for a nice dinner. Other than that, I haven't bought any in a few years.

I work with a few guys who wear cologne to work, and most all the women there wear perfume. We work in a factory. :huh

I've never worn cologne and never will. I just can't stand fragrances(gives me a headache), I use unscented soap, deodorant and shaving cream(and even laundry detergent). I can tolerate some shampoo with a smell so I use it but otherwise I prefer sticking to everything unscented. I know for a fact that there are plenty of people around me who'd be glad to tell me if I stunk, it hasn't happened yet so all the unscented stuff must work.

Its been my experience that most people who wear cologne or perfume have long since burned out their sense of smell and end up wearing so much that I can taste it when they walk by. No, I'm not exaggerating, I've smelled people wearing so much that they may as well have sprayed it right in my mouth. I'd rather smell B.O. than that any day.

Perfume on woman can be hit or miss with me, some of it just gives me a headache and aggravates my allergies. My wife has some type of citrus body spray she sometimes uses and I have gotten used to that.

Women LOVE Old Spice, it reminds them of their fathers. You can read all kinds of articles on men's style, fashion etc.... when it comes to fragrances without a doubt Old Spice is mentioned. it's old school. JFK wore Old Spice. Acqua di Parma is another classic (it's what Cary Grant wore). As is Agua Lavanda Puig (Sinatra wore it. He also wore Jungle Gardenia).

If you don't like cologne, don't buy any. Instead, if you want to support her, ask her what she likes for herself, and buy it. Tell her it's for your mother/sister/sister-in-law/etc. Then, next time you want to give her something (e.g. Valentine's Day, stocking stuffer for Xmas, etc.), wrap up what you bought and give it to her.

My wife sells it also and she buys me Velocity (I think it's called) which is Mary Kay and she likes that on me and it's ok. I also wear Halston z14 and Obsession....

Z14 - Wow, I didn't know anyone else used that stuff. It's actually one of my favorites. I do wear cologne - just one spray - whether it be going into work or when I go out. Believe it or not, females spontaneously come up to me and compliment me on how I smell. Sometimes, they're just co-workers, but occasionally, they'll be complete strangers. Don't get me wrong, it's not every day. More like 2-3 times/month, but it's still nice nonetheless.

The secret is to spray it on your shirt (not your skin), and then let it dry before putting the shirt on.

Ex co-worker bought some crapola by the quart , at Sam's I think . Add this to the fact that

I agree with a lot of what has been said. There are people who use it instead of bathing, there are people who seem to have lost their own sense of smell (this does happen BTW) and bathe in it. And there are people who are sensitive or allergic to the use of artificial scent.

A little bit for evening wear is ok with me. That's the only time I wear it and only people who are close enough to kiss my cheek would even pick up the scent - and I believe that is how it is supposed to be worn.

And I'm sure most of you will agree, there is a huge difference between expensive cologne/perfume and cheap stuff.

Bear in mind, that whether or not you add scent to your body or clothes, manufacturers choose to do this for you. It is in laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, body wash, soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and other hair treatments (hair spray is a bad one - it totally closes my airways). What I'm saying is that it is almost impossible to avoid.

Like all good things, it has been overdone to the point of annoyance. Many places of business now ban the use of scent, and I think this is ok. Better then to save it for those special occasions or evening wear.

No, they are not the same thing.

Yes, they're the same thing. Cologne is just perfume that got its name from where it originated in Germany:

Cologne or Eau de Cologne is a toiletry, a perfume in a style that originated from Cologne, Germany.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eau_de_Cologne

Main Entry: coˇlogne
Pronunciation: \kə-ˈlōn\
Function: noun
Etymology: Cologne, Germany
Date: 1814

1 : a perfumed liquid composed of alcohol and fragrant oils

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cologne

So it's just a semantic distinction at best. In both cases you're putting artificial petroleum-derivative scented chemicals on your body.

I wear it and enjoy it....my girlfriend loves to rip open my shirt and shove her face in my chest! Anyway, not sure what the big deal is. It's no different than using deodorant & a hair product when I get out of the shower. Now if it's overdone then that's different - whether male or female (some women smell like they rolled around in a rotting flower garden). On men, you should only be able to smell it if you're very close (subtlety is the key word).

Sure it is. Or else perfume is cologne. Same difference.

It's like saying all cars are the same and all music is the same. Or the difference between steak and regular ground hamburger -- they're both the same right? Just meat?

Perfume, Cologne, and Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette are scents applied to the body (or products) but they are different:

Perfumes and colognes differ in a few ways, but the most obvious is that colognes are weaker in odor. Perfumes are created using three layers of fragrance, called notes, with the topmost being the strongest but shortest lived. The middle note is more subtle and will last several hours longer, while the base note is the quietest yet will last throughout the day.

Colognes are comprised of only a single scent, whereas a layered perfume may have three, and cologne will not pack as powerful a punch or linger as long.

In both cases you're putting a chemical fragrance on yourself.True that they are both fragrances although many of them are created from flowers, woods, etc. added to a base (which may or may not be chemical). Not trying to split hairs or cause argument or deviate from the original discussion, just wanted to correct misinformation when I see it.

As far as "petroleum" products are concerned, have a look at this:

Haven't worn any in years now, since I'm married and have no need to impress the ladies, plus anything very strong scented bothers my allergies.

Scent is a powerful sense. To this day I still remember the perfume that one girlfriend wore, Red. Haven't smelled any in years, but if I think about it, I can conjure up the smell. My wife used some scented bath, lotion, and cologne when we first got married that I really liked, but they discontinued it, and she hasn't found anything else that smelled like it.

I don't use it all the time, but, I like a good bay rum aftershave.
That Ogallala product has peaked my interest.

The rest of the time, I just smell of whatever soap I used that morning. (Usually Irish Spring)

Just a note to 99% of the men wearing cologne....YOU ARE WEARING WAY TOO MUCH. ...I , and everyone else should not be able to smell you before we can see you. Now add some Ed Hardy and a blue-tooth and you are a walking douchebag.

No, most of them smell like toilet bowl cleaner.

Cvan...

It's friggin amazing how often you post something, whether it's about Kiss, Charvels or this kinda stuff, and I think to myself, damn that's my experience verbatim...in this case, right down to the French whore remark.
We were both average ordinary everyday dudes...

Never wore any my entire life till I met my wife. She likes it. I soon found a fragrance that "worked for her", but found I get more use out of it secretly sparying it on her pillow than on me. Never go to sleep unsatisfied.

One spray is nice, but to marinate in it is offensive. Remember lots of people have allergies and asthma and being around people that pour it on can affect their health. I speak from experience as one that has both asthma and allergies. :nono

Does cologne = pedals?

I use both, the former sparingly.

the wife buys stuff for me, and i wear it when i'm going somewhere to be social. i don't really bother at gigs or work, because i'm going to sweat it right off anyway.

to clarify, my drummer has family over in France and he gets a shipment once a year - usually around Christmas he takes orders - and wires money overseas to get the good stuff from the source.

liquid panty remover, i think it's called...

but yeah, some guys overdo it. i got one at work who smells like the Old Spice factory.

I always wear it. I have tried many brands, but I always come back to the basic little Orange beauty.

Perfume for men?
What next for Christ sake......hand lotion for men?

This thread made and old high school saying haunt my brain:

"If it smells like cologne, leave it alone!" ;)

I'm not a smoker. My GF bought me some, so I wear it when I am going to see her. A minor thing to give her a little more happiness the way I see it.

If I can smell you from 6" away then your good. If I can smell you from 6' away then your bad.

Good call. Cologne should never resemble the wake of a boat when someone wearing it walks by (this applies to women as well).

Yeah, endocrine disruption, thyroid problems and asthma really bring the happiness. :crazy:aok:facepalm

I use VERY sparingly (basically can't smell it unless I'm giving you a hug).

Thanks for saving me the typing time by posting this.

I'm not quite as adamant about unscented stuff but I pretty much agree with everything you said.

I get occasional migraines, one of my triggers are certain perfumes/colognes. I had to ask the other guitar player in my old band to stop wearing this one cologne to gigs (he only wore it at gigs) because it gave me a headache the instant it hit my nose.

By coincidence it also made our singer's sinuses close up.

I use hand lotion. In fact I moisturize after I shower. Glob it on. Dry skin. Plus dry climate where I grew up.

Unscented lotion though! ;)

I sport a dab of cologne everyday. We guys love it when a pretty woman smells good... well, woman also love it when a man smells good.
