i was informed that it was an mkii but it isn't. but i have one problem, and it's pretty noob: how do i plug in a mic if the only inputs i have are 1/4" inputs? i'm talking about plugging in an xlr mic. i looked around to see if xlr-to-1/4" adapters exist, and they do, but i wanted to know how recordings is originally intended. if anyone could help, i'd appreciate it.
EDIT: also, if anyone could help me figure out how to mixdown on a computer? i've got an m-audio usb interface, if that's useable.

You can buy an XLR -> 1/4" cable if you don't want to use the adapter. That's what I would suggest.
As for mixing, you'll do it in the software. Your M-Audio came with some variation of ProTools, right? You'll do it in PT.

would there be any loss in quality for using that cable?
as for mixing, awesome - thanks.

No offense, but that question is hilarious considering the 4-track tape recorder, the audio will be pretty bad anyway.
.... 4-track cassette recorders never sounded very good...
And uh, IIRC, the 414 have a mic/line input, an XLR to jack will do the trick.

Why are you using a 4 track cassette if you have an m-audio rig? Just wondering...

to answer everyone's question: i felt like messing around on cassettes pretty much. i paid 30 bucks for it, so it's not much of a loss.
thanks everyone, going to buy an adapter tomorrow.
