...make Ringo jokes around them just to watch them get mad? Not really for his drumming but more for the songs he contributed. My wife's best friend is a huge Beatles fan and I just can't help myself. I might be a bad person because of it. Sorry.

^^very unique and clever disguise for a "beatles fans suck" thread...;)

I think Ringo was the perfect drummer for the beatles...he was a good solid drummer, he wasnt keith moon or john bonham, but thats not what the beatles needed...

Ringo has laughed all the way to the bank over those jokes for decades.

Yeah, my seven year old daughter loves Ringo's songs. It also has made her a Beatles fan which makes her Daddy very happy.

I think it was Lennon who said Ringo had the best back beat in the business. Ringo is a great, no frills drummer.

Didn't John Lennon also say that maybe Ringo wasn't the best drummer, but he was the best Beatle?

On the other hand, I seem to recall a quote from John or Paul where they were asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world and replied "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles" so who knows.

For the record, Starr is often underestimated as a drummer. Sure he is not a flashy drummer, and has often talked about how uncomfortable he is with drum solos and the spotlight. However, his left handed playing on a right handed kit leads to fills dropping in very interesting places, and he has a great sense of the backbeat and the pocket.

And here's what George Harrison had to say about Starr's songwriting contribution to Abbey Road: "'Octopus's Garden' is Ringo's song. It's only the second song Ringo has ever written, mind you, and it's lovely." It burrows into your consciousness "because it's so peaceful. I suppose Ringo is writing cosmic songs these days without even realizing it."

And I bet Ringo survives them all, and has the last laugh.

In all honesty I don't dislike The Beatles or Ringo. I just like watching my friend get p****d when I make jabs about this.

Spot on :aok Listen to the Ringo's work on Sgt Peppers and the latter era Beatles. He plays exactly what is required, when it's required. Subtle, but also brilliant.

On a tangent, I think Meg White is the new Ringo. Nowhere near his ability, that's not what I mean. I mean that Meg is the new target for the drummer bashers because of her simplistic style. Again, she plays just what the music demands. In my opinion the White Stripes music would lose a lot of power if Meg was being more flashy.

Think how great the Beatles could have been with Neal Peart on drums instead of Ringo, Yngwie on guitar instead of George, Billy Sheehan instead of Paul, and maybe Pavarotti on vocals....

On the other hand, that'd be stupid. Maybe virtuosity isn't what makes a great bandmate after all.

Did you read the part in my OP where I stated that I wasn't referring to his playing ability?

Ringo rules. He was one of the personalies that made the Beatles the sensation that they were. And he actually contributed to the songwriting here and there, sang a tune every so often, and could hit those drums better than most. Not much to make fun of if you ask me.

Hardly matters; a dis is a dis.

Meanwhile, what of his songs? How many drummers actually have ANY songs at all?

More than one of his vocal features charted, and are beloved the world 'round. Game, set, match.

Funny you mention that because I was gonna compare him to Meg White, but decided against it...but I agree...her drumming as simple as it is is INSTANTLY recognizable and always compliments the song...

I am actually liking the Stripes more and more lately and her drumming is actually part of the reason...

A real Beatle fan wouldn't bother getting their feathers ruffled over this.

Define 'songs he contributed'. Do you mean the songs Ringo wrote himself and sang on with the Beatles (I think there are just 2 - Octopus's Garden and Don't Pass Me By)? Or all of the other Beatle songs he sang on? Because those other songs were either written by Lennon/McCartney (Yellow Submarine, With a Little Help From My Friends, etc) and given to Ringo to sing, or were cover tunes (Matchbox, Boys, etc).

So don't put the entire blame on Ringo for duds like Act Naturally or Good Night. Yeah not everything the Beatles did was golden.

The other Beatle Boys are on record having said that Ringo was the glue that held the band together. Ringo would see the others get in spats over their musical ideas, and he would rein them back in and gain a compromise. It worked, apparently...
