I am looking into getting a sequencer that will help me develop certain aspects of my playing. I have heard good things about the Yamaha QY100 and I see a QY70 as well, which is less expensive. I really know nothing about these things, but I'd like to learn. I'd like something that doesn't require me to become a software engineer in order to use it effectively. Do I use these with amps? Headphones? My computer? Can anyone give me the "Using/Practicing with Sequencers 101" course...or point me in the right direction for some info?
Thanks all!

I would REALLY reccomend trying out "Band-In-A-Box"!!! For practicing, I can't really think of a better tool. What it is is not actually a sequencer, but a sophisticated MIDI loop generating system that creates complete arrangements from thousands of 2 to 4 bar phrases. Just type in the chords you want on a lead-sheet-like page, select a style (they have thousands of these), and a key and tempo, and hit go! Pretty amazing. Some of the styles are cheezy, and since you're using the internal PC's synth some of the sounds (especially guitars) are a little lacking (although this can be improved by having another synth play the parts), but a lot are really good too. In fact, some of the keyboard tracks I've generated have wound up on recordings of mine!
This system lives on your computer, and it's easy to install and easy to use. And at under $150 it's a great deal. I know I sound like an ad for it, but I sure wish I'd gotten a copy sooner...it's great for practicing, and a lot easier to get going than a sequencer. Plus, if you look around there's LOTS of Band-In-A-Box files available online for songs in all styles of music.

OMG - I didn't know they still even made hardware sequencers.
Don't do this.
Get some software.
Band in a box should be first on your short list to test out.
There are other options but really, BIAB should do everything you need.
I think with a hardware device you're going to be asking for trouble - I've used hardware and software sequencers over the years and the flexibility of software makes it no contest - kind of like a Typewriter versus Word Processing software.
This is not to say that the hardware versions (or a workstation keyboard or "arranger" keyboard) aren't the right device for you but in general, you run into limitations that involve buying a whole new device, rather than simply upgrading software. Even changing software is typically more cost-effective than having a used piece of gear you no longer use and can't sell laying around the house.
