I know you think little dogs are... well you know. But they ARE dogs.

Our Romeo has established himself as the alpha dog since we got him. Some of the others never really gave a shit, but still HE was the alpha dog, with ME as his only barrier to complete dominance. After Roscoe, then Rachel and finally Ruby died, he was so damn lonely. He cried and cried every day after Ruby was gone and it was only him. Finally, my wife brought home Chloe. He loved her from the start. But she is almost more than he can handle, and SHE is taking over his spot as alpha dog. I see a big difference in his attitude. I assume this is a natural turn of events in a dog's life, but I feel bad for him. Chloe is so young and strong and fast, and he is old and weary and half blind. At first, she really cheered him up. A LOT! But now, I see him as feeling inferior or something. I was hoping she'd give him a reason to live, but now I wonder if she is giving him a reason to just give up. I absolutely HATE the thought of burying a 4th dog in 2-3 years. Maybe he will be OK. We try to give him as much love and praise as we can, but Chloe is demanding attention, much like HE did when he was the baby. SHE seeks it out, while he no longer does. We have to seek him out and give him love. I guess that's all we can do, but I thought maybe you might have some insight.

Little dogs are.....special gifts!

Seeking him out, as you're doing, is likely the best thing even if it doesn't seem like much to you as I know you want to do more to let him know he is as loved as ever.

How old is Chloe now?

Chloe is maybe 9 moths if that. She about full sized ( as much as she'll get), and she's a handful. I take them down to the basement to put them out in back, which is my favorite place to let hem out. When they come back in, she immediately runs to the halfway landing on the stair going back up, and wait to ambush Romeo. And HE always hesitates! Before she came along, he was the bull of the woods. To see him hesitate is kinda sad. She just wanted to play, but he acts like he's embarrassed he's too old. At first, after the initial getting to know you stage, he started to play with her every couple of days. But lately, he doesn't care anymore. It's sort of like he knows he's out of his league. She can run circles around him. Before we got her, HE seemed like a little superdog. I just don't want him to give up.

Ahh, the ambush!

With our two new pups the ambush was doing something similar.

The girl, Allie, was very cordial and loved to approach my wife and I.
Her brother, Cricket, wanted all of the attention and would ambush her when she tried to come to us or relax once she was there.
She took to hiding under the couch and not coming to us even when she wanted to.

After some time spent going out of our way to show the boy that we wanted her to come to us too she's gotten better though still a little gun shy.

It was hard to, in a way, ignore him but he got the message and has cut back on interfering with her.

Of course like Chloe a lot of it is playing but he had to see we wanted her to come without fear of being "attacked".

You also have the age difference and he is probably worn out from all the puppy energy around him and has decided the effort to seek you out is too tiring.

Hopefully soon she will calm down more too which should be a help.

Scott,

Couldn't sleep, so I got up to do a few things and saw this. I'll write more tomorrow, but just wanted to say that I think you are over-thinking and over-analyzing it. I wouldn't fret over it too much.

My female dog is the Alpha dog in the house. We got another male dog that literally let's her bump on him and do stuff like that. We've been strict with her but it shows no signs of wearing off.

our vet gave us some good advise- "don't treat your dogs like they're old, cuz they don't know that they're old."

You're probably right. Thanks, Gordon.
