View Full Version : You're a liar.

this past 4th of July found me at a good friend's parents' home. they live a few miles away, which is just a halfway point for me and my buddy - and since i grew up there, i'm sort of a regular...even as an adult with kids in tow.
anyway, their neighbor is a world-class engineer and producer. he owns a national multimedia company and has ALL the big names in both audio and video production pass through both his studios and home. it's always a crapshoot as to whom you're going to meet on any given night at this house, and always fun. and hey, the guy's son is a decent musician in his own right and has hooked me up with a penthouse gig a time or two when the calls came in, so who am i to complain?
anyway, i often tout myself as a "working" musician. it's a play on words. i both hold a steady job, and i play gigs. more often than not, i'll kick about 50% of my gig money into the household fund and stash the rest away for a NGD, NAD, or whatever.
BUT when i'm talking to other musicians in person, i'll more often than not present myself as simply "musician", even though i'm obviously (to me) not. and that's when i found myself talking to a fairly famous guitarist this past 4th of July, while bumming him cigarettes, beer, and letting him pick a few mortars out of my box o' fireworks. he asked what i did for a living, and in the obvious effort to come off as "cool", i said something to the effect of "Uh, I'm a musician." ...which got me to thinking:
how many lies do we tell each day? especially around here...
i'm polling just as a curiosity, it's annonymous of course.

The LAST thing I'd tell someone who asked what I did for a living would be "musician"!
I also have no reason to lie on here, who am I going to impress?!

I never call myself a "musician"......If the subject comes up, I'll usually say something like "Well, I play a little guitar.....actually it's about the same size as a regular guitar, I just don't play it as well as most other people do."

I have no reason to lie about what I do.
And if the subject comes up I say something along the lines of what '4dessert' says with a healthy dose of self deprecation.
You know...I play a little here and there, just for fun. :D

I'd be lying if I said I lied on TGP, so let's just let sleeping dogs lie. Hey, can I use that in the "Stupid Sayings" thread?

Well, we all try to present ourselves in the best possible light don't we? On a forum like this we only "know" the bits others write about themselves and sometimes what we've heard through other sources, so if someone wants to be less than forthright with the truth it's not that hard to do. Am I a liar? I don't think so - besides, I prefer the word inventive.

Believe me when I say I have reason to be modest about my abilities. No need to lie; that would just be silly.

No real reason to lie here.
I don't know any of you personally, and likely will never meet any of you. Isn't that the beauty of a forum like this?
You can be absolutely honest. I have to bullshit all day long at my job. I wouldn't do it here.

Other than the "yes that dress looks great on you" type of lie, I never lie. What is the point?
Of course honesty has gotten me into a LOT of trouble.

I lie like a mofo every single time I type "IMO" ... in all honestly, I refuse to concede the possibility of my opinion and the right opinion diverging from each other. :rotflmao

I didn't see the "on TGP" part of the question. I don't here, but I might elsewhere.
You know, like "No we have something going on that night" when we don't want to go do something we are invited to.

I tend towards honesty. I'm not gonna sweear I never took romantic liberty in the name of a good story :D
In your scenario though I wouldn't call myself a musician. Hell, all they got to do is put a guitar in my hands and they'll know I don't earn money playing one. :rotflmao
Hey...can I change my vote?

It depends on the situation. I'm quite capable of lying, I have lied in the past, but it's not a behavior that I like to exhibit. Sometimes, however, a lie is perfectly acceptable.
In fact, just last week, I lied to my wife about why I was volunteering to pick up her friend that we were seeing a movie with. I said it made more sense so that my wife wasn't in a rush to beat traffic to pick her up and make it to the theater on time. In truth, I picked our friend up 3 hours early and we ran around to buy my wife a stand mixer and other assorted birthday gifts. Perfectly acceptable lie.

I wonder how many of the 76% who voted "never" have found ways to sneak gear into their houses pat their wives.

Indeed...someone that says they've never lied is someone I have a hard time believing.

As a young man, I learned that my Mom couldn't tell guitars apart if they were the same color. I never had a new guitar after that, but they were all red.

I can't tell a lie. I mean I could try, but I simply don't have a poker face. Nor do I have the memory required to keep a bunch of stories straight. So I always tell the truth to the best of my ability - it's not honesty, it's a defense mechanism!
Yes, I'm the guy who would say, "Hon, it's not the dress...."

...he asked what i did for a living, and in the obvious effort to come off as "cool", i said something to the effect of "Uh, I'm a musician." I say, "I'm a musician" all the time, but not when people ask me what I do for a living. That's a specific question with only one unqualified answer. They aren't asking you if you supplement your income by playing music, they're asking what's your primary source of income.
Lying about something like that can come back and unnecessarily bite you on the butt, tarnishing your reputation needlessly and permanently.

I'm fairly honest here, I don't care if any of you like me or not . . .well, that's not true.
I have a couple friends who use the term "up-living" to describe people taking liberties with their own stories.

I don't see the point to lie on TGP.
So no I don't lie on TGP.
Maybe I write some stupid things sometimes (almost all the time?)
But I don't lie.
Gargloic
I missed the whole around here bit...
I don't lie, at least not intentionally, here on TGP. There's no need. I have little to gain from doing so. My "sometimes" was regarding outside of this forum.
And for the people claiming never:
You've never called in to work claiming to be sick simply because you didn't feel like going in that day, or exaggerated the reason? You've never milked an illness for more than it was? Work is the place that most people I know lie.
As someone else mentioned, you've never snuck a new pedal or piece of gear in under someone's nose and stretched the "truth" when found out?
I'd love to hear some of the rationalization that goes on for some of the above.

I don't lie here on TGP as I have no need to pretend I am something I am not.

No reason to lie to faceless strangers. If anything, I'm probably more honest on message boards than in real life.
As for the musician question, I have a pretty broad definition. If you play an instrument reasonably well, you're a musician. Just because you don't make your living as a professional musician does not mean you're not a musician. I've been playing an instrument and performing music in front of people since I was 10, so I feel completely comfortable with calling myself a musician.
Just like there are guys who are athletes, who don't make their living as professional athletes.

If it were mandatory to provide a link to one's playing here on TGP, I think you'd find that people are lying on this poll about lying lol. :hide2
