Hi all!

So, I am about to purchase a new amp. I've always wanted a Hiwatt or Hiwatt-type amp, but the college budget won't allow me the pleasure just yet....

I have seen some good reviews of the original 50w Kustom Defender and all signs point to this being a good (AFFORDABLE) fit for the Hiwatt sound.

Does anyone here own one and if so, what do you think? Can it do a respectable Hiwatt (think Pink Floyd, not Who) sound?

Thanks!

I've been watching, to see if anyone replies.

Played the Defender in stores, and liked it. I own a '36 Coupe and '72 Hardtop, and love them. However, I've never played a Hiwatt.

Thanks Slim! I've played it in stores as well. The clean sounds great, but I was unable to get it past 4 since the store was so busy and at the time I was not seriously shopping.

My worry is that the clean sound at high volumes and amp breakup from being pushed by a boost/fuzz/etc. will sound nothing like a Hiwatt (not that I expect it to be dead on, but I'm hoping for close-ish...)

I was used to vintage Fenders (Tweed Deluxe, Blackface Bassman, Bandmaster, etc.). My Kustoms could get the sound that I was used to. Although the amps are more Mid heavy, I was able to adjust the EQ, to get the sounds that I was looking for. I expect that the Defender, would also be very adjustable.

The Defender looks like a cool amp, I've wanted to play one for a while now . . . just haven't been around one in person yet. Just like the Double Cross.
