The old one max'ed out and the admins shut it down, so it's time to start a new one!
I've only managed to do one gig since landing my SOD2/GW112TH/EV rig and I only had a couple days to dial it in before doing that one. That was over 6 weeks ago and I've finally had some rehearsals lately to get it dialed for the band mix and, as of last night's rehearsal, feel that I've finally got it nailed! It's really blowin' me away. It ended up pretty differently dialed than what I had for the recent clips I've posted - less highs, less mids - rounder and softer. Playing at a casino this Sat and if they allow recording (they don't allow photography!) I'll definitely get some clips. If not, I just picked up a Zoom R16 (amazing little box!) and will be doing some home clips soon
Let's hear it for all things Glaswerks!

Hell yeah! On both counts! I can't tell you how nice it is to have all the knobs right where I can reach them on this thing. It really allowed me to fine tune it, realtime, while running through our setlist over the last couple nights. Every time I hit a new MIDI preset (via the Amp Gizmo), it was just sweet tone heaven.

I wish I had time to play my 2 SOD II's :). One is a Highway 101 tuning and the other is similar to one I built for Henry Kaiser with the additional Bluesman mode, the normal (Henry) clean section is fenderish but with more nutz.

I just joined the club- Just took delivery of a Zingaro from TGP'r- Holy shit. What a friggin' lights out amp. Low gain killer.
Runnin' it through Traviswalk's old 16-65s. I was gonna send back to Gary for a once over and now I'm thinking twice about lettin' it outta the room.

Yeah, I'm getting killed at work today (still at work at 7:00!!!), which probably means little or no time on the Glaswerks tonight! :(
Interesting options you chose for yourself, Gary. What is the "Highway 101" tuning?

Thanks for resurrecting "The New Glaswerks Thread"...
I've had my original Glaswerks Super OverDrive 100 watt, that I scored from Nicky Moroch and was upgraded to a" Big Iron" tranny and tweaked and voiced by the man himself Gary Johnson, for about a year now.
I affectionately named it "Monty" due to it's really cool python/snake like tolex pattern in burgandy, with a matching GW112TH cab that was loaded with a Scholtz Sugarcone 8ohm speaker.
Recently loaded a EVM-12L speaker in my GW Thiele cab.
I have been enjoying this beauty and play it almost everyday, it's simply a great amp with so much versatility, musicality and amazing clean and lead tones.
Thanks a million Gary!

The Sugarcone vs. EVM-12L comparison in the GW112TH cab is an interesting exercise I have wondered about. I currently have a Jenkins Highway 61 2x12 with Sugarcones and the GW112TH/EV and prefer the latter, but I've always wondered what the Sugarcone would sound like in the GW112TH. Can you offer any adjectives...or maybe even clips?
Thanks,
Dave

Another thing I love about my Glaswerks is the external bias points! It baffles me to no end that not every amp has these. I just got done practicing for a couple hours for the gig tonight and thought I'd double-check the bias, since I haven't looked at it in a couple months. Sure enough, it has drifted a little. Took me less than 5 minutes to tweak it back in. Seems like a trivial thing, but that feature just saved me a good 30 minutes or more of my life!

Going through the recording on the new Zoom R16 from the gig Sat and ran across this little series of runs that I don't think I've ever played before, but kinda' dig and wanted to share...of course, on the SOD II! This was the HRM channel with the neck/middle FL SC PUPs, but I had dialed down the highs for the previous song and forgot to dial them back up for this one, so it's too dark on top, IMO, and you don't hear the snap and pop I wanted for this. I like the part from about 0:06-0:17. Clam towards the end though :(

Thanks, Gary! Wish I didn't have to depend so much on luck and mood to pull off a few nuggets. The rest of the solo was pretty mediocre, IMO. Lo, the curse of the weekend warrior hobbyist! Ha, ha. Practice, practice, practice, right? ;)
Hey, we had a fair number of musicians show up for this casino gig and two guitar players whom I only know distantly through the grapevine came up out of the blue and wanted to know "what the hell" I was playing through because it sounded so good. Yeah, baby!
Anyways....got a few more nice clips from this gig showing some different tones from the amp, including cleans. Just gotta' find time to edit/mix them!

Here ya go, Gary! It's two room mics and a direct vocal feed, so there were limitations. (My solo is the second one.)
(Oh, I should also mention, our singer had bronchitis and the tail end of strep here and was coughing off-mic in between phrases. Still sounds great, IMO!)

Just thought I'd post while winding down after the first gig with the SOD II in a local club whose owner is a fabulous player and who is really into gear, but hasn't quite heard of most of the stuff we know here as quite recognizable. This guy and another great player in attendance absolutely loved the GW tones I was cranking tonight. Just raved about it. Interesting that both guys have not liked my previous D-styles all that much, but raved about the SOD II as being "really special". The bar owner said, "Damn, it sounds like Robben Ford in a box, but the cleans are even better". Too tired to unload the car and get my H2 (which is all I had time to set up tonight - no R16), but I have some audio from the gig and will post tomorrow if it came out OK.

Is the controlled feedback you exhibit here (and on the Ojai clips) more a product of the preamp values in this GW version, or your settings on the OD channel, or where you sit in relation to the speaker?
Well,
I gigged with my SODII/Mesa 112 (EVM12L) rig last nite for the first time.
Outdoor gig with covered stage.
It's been in the studio and rehearsals 'til now.
PRS Custom 22 (Dragon II pups), TC Electronic NOVA System into the front, TC Electronic ND-1 delay into the loop. That's it.
I dig the sound of the ND-1 into the loop of the Glaswerks better than the NOVA, and had one anyways...it works perfectly.
We do alot of big band stuff, and then do everything from ZZ Top to SRV to Steely Dan.
There were a few musicians out in the audience, and they all told me that this was some of the best guitar tones they've heard out of this band.
Especially the cleans. Nice, defined, airy with a bit of punch. Headroom for days. I already knew all this. :D
It felt and sounded really good to me onstage. I was a bit soft through the first set, as I was feeling my way with db's and didnt want to step all over everyone in the process. I was also mic'd through the PA.
I finally ended up with both masters (I used Clean and OD2 all night) around 5-6, and the loop levels around 9:00. That may have to be refigured at the next gig (this thursday). The other thing about this rig, is the overdrive channel has PLENTY o' BASS. I had to crank it down a couple of notches when doing lower power chords on the Marcus Miller version of 'Frankenstein'. Once I did that, everything was pretty much dialled in. I really dig this amp, and will use it on the next gig (another outdoor festival type event).

The feedback from the bar owner and my former guitarist in this band is that the GW is kciking out the best tones they've ever heard out of me, although the bar owner is reserving the right to hear my Maz 18 again in a side-by-side, as that was his former fave. ;) I told him I've already done that experiment and know what he'd pick!

Yeah, man, from neck/middle SC clean to neck/middle SC HRM to bridge HB non-HRM...on the fly....Gary's SOD II does it all! I should mention that for me to hit the PUP change and footswitch channels and make it, on a whim, from 5th fret 5th string to 15th fret 2nd string (to shamelessly quote Mr. JB) without totally clamming out is a friggin' MIRACLE...for me! :) Ha, ha, ha.....I wish some miracles hung around for a few other tunes....like the intro to "I Know A Little" - which I totally FLUBBED! :( Sorry, Gary, no clips of that one. ;)

I think you gotta' be a little careful when throwing around the term "master volume" with these amps. There are several different ways to control overall output level and some of them are much better at achieving the desired/intended results than others.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that when engaging the OD channel bright caps (in order to get "the tone"), you really need to keep the OD channel masters up around 12:00, engage the built-in tube FX loop and then control overall level with the send/return knobs. Otherwise, you'll get too much high end. That's the way this circuit was designed to be used. That's part of the "magic".
You could also disengage the built-in loop and use an external tube FX loop with long cables to simulate the extra capacitance which is conveniently already emulated inside the amp and then use the external loop's send/return knobs as master volumes.
Personally, I wanted to take advantage of the magic/convenience designed into the internal loop and also have an easy way to control global output level (w/o reaching behind the amp), so I asked Gary to make me a little MV box (with a 1M audio taper pot) that I could plug into the insert loop and place on the amp near the front panel so I could keep the amp loop engaged with the send/return levels fixed at 12:00 and the OD channel masters fixed at 12:00 and then easily be able to reach over, mid-tune if necessary, to tweak global output level. Works great!
Point is though, there's a pretty specific way to control global output levels if you want to get the best results.

So Dave, might not an appropriate volume pedal do this just as well?
gb
Absolutely, if you have the coordination to set the level accurately enough with your foot and not accidentally whack it...out of whack! ;) I tried a couple different volume pedals and they just didn't work for me. It was too hard to find the right level and then keep it there without me or somebody else accidentally changing it. It was also too hard to adjust it up/down slightly and accurately if the needs changed during the night. With Gary's audio taper 15% (i.e. gradual slope) pot and 1-12 numbered dial, it's a piece of cake. I do know guys who use volume pedals in their loops and do an *amazing* job of riding them all night for really nice effects and dynamics, but that's a real technique thing that I just didn't feel like messing with. Totally personal preference though. Technically, volume pedals work just fine. I did find that the insert loop sounded more transparent than the FX loop and Gary said it was because the insert loop return is higher impedance than the FX loop return, so with a passive control like a pot, you get a lower effective source impedance. With active devices, like the Hilton volume pedal I tried, both loops sounded pretty much the same.

Thanks, Gary. The SOD II continues to garner compliments (and questions about the brand name ;)) everywhere we play! The H2 is indeed a very "handy" little recorder. It has really helped me work on my weaknesses as a player too. I wished I had started recording rehearsals/gigs earlier, just to get the brutally honest feedback! LOL.

I'm progressively more and more impressed with how it holds together in challenging venues...like this garage facing out into an open air driveway!
