View Full Version : looking for a good slow minor blues

RockManDan

working up a set list for a blues rock trio im starting. i need a good minor slow blues that goes well with a strat. kind of a 'tin pan alley' type of song, except not that song, because my lead style (esp when playing a strat) is already pretty heavily srv-influenced so i dont want to sound like a one trick pony. i have a decent singing voice but nothing to write home about. any suggestions (youtube links welcome) are appreciated. thanks!

I was going to suggest as the years go passing by too. Jeff Healey kicks serious tuckus on it also.

These two:

Paul Butterfield "Gotta Mind to Give Up Living"
Albert Collins "Gotta Cold Cold Feeling"

work well.

How about ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues"?

or Otis Rush/John Mayall's Bluesbreaker "All Your Love" (I miss loving) -its fun as it goes back and forth between a minor key Rhumba and a major key swing shuffle- keeps everyone on their toes!

just listen to the songs, pick a key that you or someone can sing and go for it!

Comment on Albert Kings "As the Years Go Passing By" :

I have NO IDEA where I read this (it has been many years, maybe a guitar mag?) but I read that the opening guitar hook to "LAYLA" was from Duane Allman quoting (on his guitar) the opening vocal melody of that song, as sung by Albert K.: "There is nothing I can say"(or whatever the actual words are, but its the same melody) have no idea if that is true or not, have to ask EC

How about ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues"?

My first thought. There are hundreds of others that would fit the bill though

Tin Pan Alley?
Minor blues?
Will Gershwin work?
What time of year is it?

Is this a no brainer?

How about:
"Queen of Hearts" - Allman Brothers
"Old Love" - Clapton, Ronnie Baker Brooks, or John Mayer

Good call on "Gambler's Roll" -
Another good Rory G. song would be "A Million Miles Away"

Check out some early Otis Rush, some Fenton Robinson (I think he did the definitive "As the years go passin' by" and I am a HUGE Albert King fan), and some Luther Allison - you'll find something that hits you

Lotta great songs already mentioned. maybe check out John Mayall's "Marriage Madness", Mick Taylor's solo is one of his best - and that's saying something.

if you want to get away from the SRV thing,

We used to do Blue Jean Blues....and then of course a long solo break, but I would build it up and nod to the drumer when I was ready......

then we would launch into the fast 4/4 section of the solo to Money and rock that out for a bit...then just kinda end it on something....depending on who was dancing and how dirty.

...then when the time comes for the solo, steal some of Kirk Fletcher's stuff off this video, made by TGP member dddelta. I think the tune is called 'I'm your Postman', but this is all about the guitar playing over a imin - IVdom - Vdom blues.
