In the past 2 years or so, I've started collecting books and I'm wondering if anyone here does the same? My collection isn't anything fancy or valuable... just a few shelves full of the stuff I like.

If you're a collector and have some time, show us your collection!

I was.

I had several hundred books, most of them hardcover after years of belonging to book clubs and frequenting garage sales. I LOVED my books. Unfortunately, with this last move, I had to get rid of them as we no longer have the room. Also sold six floor to ceiling bookcases.

I envy you your collection.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! That is a lot of books to sell... maybe you'll be able to start a new collection someday :)

Thanks for the compliments!

I also have hundreds and hundreds of books. Many, many film related books, music related books, law books, and hardcover and softcover literature and non-fiction, but I also no longer have them out in any presentable or photographical form.

But the last time I moved, I need 20 moving boxes just to hold books -- more than I needed for all my clothing and household items.

My wife and I both have been to grad school twice, and the number of books we brought to the marriage 18 years ago was staggering. In the ensuing 18 years of continued reading, we could easily start an online book resale store, with just about every concievable genre covered.

We have moved the majority over the past few years thru the old garage sale, and then whatever doesn't sell, take to Goodwill process. We still have a ton of books, but I have begun buying mostly used these days. Makes it nice, because you can trade in for the next read. I am really itching to get a slate computer, so I can go digital with future book purchases. Waiting for an Android based platform that rivals the iPad, as I don't want both an eReader and a slate.

We have thousands of books. They're an anchor. I used to love to display them all. After moving 13 years ago, I dread ever moving again - mostly because of the books. They're heavy, a pain to pack, consume space and generally have to get put in storage because our house isn't big enough for them all. I'd love to have a house with a library (inlaws had one - rolling ladder and everything).

Last year I took all my technical books, save for the ones I actually use (like my own), and threw them in the trash. Hundreds of pounds and an entire bookshelf freed up. After even a couple of years they were so outdated the local library wouldn't even take them. That was only the tip of the iceburg though, and we have piles of boxes full of books in the attic.

in the last few months, e-books have overtaken traditional books in sales volume at Amazon.

gonna be interesting, the future of publishing.

now if you have a book of you own, you don't have to use the "gatekeepers" anymore.....

Love it and hate it, but like you, I had to get rid of mine. My solution?

Not as great as having a real book in hand, but makes storing them so much easier.

I'm in the process of moving, so all of my books are in boxes :(

They'll be back out and on the shelves in the next few months :D

My books are still boxed up after the last move. Most are either from grad school and those I have picked up while working on projects - lots of out of print stuff - mostly U.S. history. Nothing terribly valuable but I do have a few that bring $400 to $500.

I clean most of them out every couple of years (usually donating to the local library), finally broke down & got a Kindle last month after the price drop - I typically read 100+ books a year.

My mess. Gotta do something with them soon. Moving and don't want to take all of them. Some will go to my son and daughter and some I may eBay.

no digital photographic evidence, but i have what i call "Ye Olde Booke Collecshune" at the house. mostly stuff that's been picked over at flea markets and jockey lots from "antique book dealers".

of course, that was back before the vintage/antique craze drove prices through the roof...purchasing has dropped off since for me.

majority of it is religious themed text, some 1st editions, lots of interesting tech/text books, anatomy texts, some engineering, some music related, not a whole lot of songbooks - looking primarily for hardback and bound stuff. not much interest to me in collecting fiction/literature - unless it's a classic or diamond in the rough.

i have about 150 in all shapes and sizes. a few of the more valuable ones are in a safe deposit. ironically, one of them i found at a local Catholic Church rummage sale for $0.50!

for pleasure reading...gads...tons of stuff. i just use the library for the most part - it's easier that way.

I've never managed to make it more than 15 mins in that chair without falling asleep.

Actually, Amazon says that ebooks are now outselling hardcovers (no mention of paperbacks). What i'd be interested in is whether it had an effect on the sales numbers of hardcovers/paperbacks, or if these were 'new' sales that wouldn't have been made otherwise.

My wife and I have about 300 books, and are starting to get into collecting old books (we've found a bunch of great stuff at estate sales lately)...but I'm a librarian, so really it's just bringing my work mentality (and hyper organization) home with me :)

Zim - or anyone - can you tell me how this works? I see you purchase the nook or kindle for a couple of hundred dollars.......... then what?

There are another two full bookcases to the right of the picture, and probably another 100 or so on the stairs leading down to the basement that my wife is bugging me to put away.

I'd guess I've got about 1500 books.

I just checked out the Barnes and Nobles Nook, and it is wifi with a 3g option. So, you pay thru whatever vendor (typically they are proprietary, so Nook=B&N), and they get dumped onto your device. The Nook also does music if you like. Has an SD card slot so you can up your storage capacity.

I think you can store/purchase stuff on your pc and download to your device also. So one time fee for device, and then pay as you go for books.

We have a lot of books. I have a few shelves filled with guitar books, a bunch of text books from college and grad school, and lots of fiction. I rarely buy fiction now, as I'm not much of a re-reader. However, I'm at the library about once a week.

I have lots of books. Thousands. I love that you can put them on a wall and have them take up no room at all. Great insulation as well.

Hundreds piled in the garage. I started collecting in the late 60's and haven't stopped yet. I frequently go back and reread a series before reading a new volume if it has been a while since the last one came out. Some I just reread because they are great like Dune and the Chronicals of Amber.

Hundreds, maybe a couple few thousand of books around here. My wife might read a book every 3 years, so they are all mine. Science fiction, technical books, theology, music, horror, fantasy (like the Hobbit and Dune books), lots of other odds and ends books.

Right now I'm going through Waylon Jennings autobiography with Johnny Cash's autobiography and Heaven and Hell, my life in the Eagles all waiting in the wings. On a musical autobiography kick this year I guess. I'm actually liking Waylon's book more than I thought I would.

shouldn't it be the other way around? The lack of a hard-cover should let the pages "breathe" better:hide2
I have one room that is 16X16 all lined with books...it is virtually soundproof.
