Can someone who doesn't consider them self too hip please tell me what the big deal about Dumble is here?

There is a good size contingent that enjoy the tones these amps put out. There is an even smaller contingent that can meet the supply/demand dynamics and buy one. The rest of the crew enjoy the many great clones that are available.
I'm still pretty hip though.

Among other legendary amps and amp builders Dumble and his amps are among the best ever. The only reason folk fight about them and get into wars is immaturity. Grown men fighting over inanimate objects need a life!
Lets talk, share, educate and grow but the fights that happen over Dumble amps and the many copies is crazy. Oh well!:D

That video is too funny. Not because it's a little hard on Tag ( which it is ) but because it defines the neurosis some ( many ? ) of us have. "If I just can get this pedal, that amp, this guitar, those strings, brand X picks, then I'll sound like so and so, or obtain this elusive sound that I hear in my head".

I have never played a real one. I have heard them in person, being played by various players. And, I have played through some clones that were/are highly touted as close to the originals.
There's my Disclaimer.
Now, to try and give an actual answer, to what seems like an actual question:
I think that the responsiveness of the amp to each player's individual touch is a primary reason people like them.
Nicer amps all seem to have this textural and dynamically responsive quality to them.
Also, the voicing of these amps is of particular interest to many. How they sit within a band's mix, etc.
There are however different types of "Dumble Tone". So, there isn't just one definitive example, I don't think.
Players who are "known" and use them are Sonny Landreth, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, SRV, David Lindley, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, Santana, and I'm sure, quite a few others.
I'm sure others here (who hopefully have first hand experience) will update/complete/correct this post.
But, I hope this helps some.

:rotflmao I AM a slide player and thats what i was Playing through the Dumble..I'm always on the lookout for a great Slide amp.
but the Sound I like is more of the big Fat single 15" speaker tone, even the Peavey Delta works somewhat for me.
and if the guitar doesn't have the sustain already in it.. then the amps sustain just seems artificle to me.

he just knows what capacitors, resistors, & other componenets to use to make an amp great. he also knows the tricks to filter the electricity thru the circuits to make the amp tone up the way a player wanted. when he modded fenders, many times he left the original transformer in. old-old boogies before they were called boogies had fender transformers too. until fender saw alot of their transformers were going to an obscure area in northern california--then randy started making his own or got them somewhere. there is no typical dumble--they are made for specific guys. & i think he usually suggested using jbls or altecs way back. he gets an amp to just have this smooth tone that one has to hear to believe--see peter lerche on youtube with his ods. several of the boutique guys have been inside dumbles--de-gooped them & know the basics. some can clone--& can base designs off them for whatever a customer wants. as for slide tones--yeah--lindley is brilliant. now bludo has a model keltner ordered that gets there--see lance's vids with it. & the video on tag's dumble spell is great. supposedly someone is making an amp based on tag's old dumble he sold. that will need a whole 'nother internet to handle those comments--the gear page & internet as we know it would crash :munch

OMG! That video is too funny...
In the good old days, it used to be: buy a guitar, amp, and effects based on what sounds good to you... and then play.
Life was so simple before finding out no matter how good something sounds to you, somebody has written a review panning it... rips your favorite gear in a forum... or has a video to show why you should have bought the piece of gear that you passed up.
A boutique used to be a place where you brought the wife to shop. Boutique now means gear you spend hours researching on the web... and spend at least as much time planning out how to afford it.
Few of us will ever own a real Dumble... and I'm sure many of us wish we could. I don't own one... and probably never will.
If you get a chance to play one... by all means, go for it. If you can afford one... by all means go for it.
They say the touch sensitivity, tone, and overall feel makes it worth every penny. Perhaps... and perhaps not.
They say the clone builders have nailed it. Perhaps... and perhaps not.
They also say my Ethos TLE pedal sounds just like a Dumble. Perhaps... and perhaps not.
Your mileage may vary.
If you never get a Dumble... perfect your craft with the tools you've got. Mr. Clapton said it best: "it's in the way that you use it..."
Remember, here in TGP land, the grass is always greener... in the yard of the guy with the Dumble.

Dumbles are extremely well made amps, made in few numbers, and used by an pretty exclusive club of "elite" guitarists over the years, that's what legends are made of... :)
I have a few hours on a Dumble ODS and it was wonderful, but at the time I tried it, it would have little use to me, as I was mostly into hard-rock/metal back then.
Personally I don't like the Dumble tone Tag is chasing that much, they can do so much more.

I don't understand why anyone here feels the need to bash anyone else about this topic. If you're bashing, have you spent any amount of time with these amps personally? How about giving us a real evaluation rather than disparaging comments directed at other posters. I have never had the opportunity to play a Dumble so can't express a personal hands on opinion. I've see Robben Ford up close with and without his and with the Dumble, I thought Robben's playing was more expressive and dynamic , maybe he just had an exceptional night who knows. Sonny's Landreth's sounded like it was alive and breathing, like the T rex in Jurassic Park, and on a different plane than the rest of us, some of the best guitar tones bar none I've ever heard. I have a Fuchs ODS, several vintage Fenders, Bogner Shiva, Budda SD30, have played but never owned Marshalls and have a cabinet full of classic and boutique pedals. While the Fuchs is "Dumble inspired" ,ie not a real Dumble, I can play it without pedals and easily find the tone I'm looking for at any moment with a little tweeking. I can't say that about any of the other amps. Just my $0.02.
Another Dumble thread, bahahahha. Dumble is unique because it's got the tubes uspide down.

Currently there are are TONS of guys out there that know how to build great tube amps. So,Why exactly do guys get so worked up about this one particular Amp brand?
35 years of Mystery Vibe and VooDoo, nothing more, nothing less.
My issue is ALWAYS gonna be simply this.
anyone that spends that kind of cash for ANYTHING, be it amp, guitar or car. would NEVER admit it sucked, no matter HOW bad it really was.
they NEED it to remain a high Status object, so they can make their money back on it. this is simple human nature folks and for every USed Dumble bought... there was someone that let it go.. ask yourself Why? Why would anyone let go the "Greatest Amp in the World" huh?
Now don't get me wrong, The Dumbles I've played sounded fine... great even....but, Not "fabulous" for me... but that's the whole point... Music is individual.... YOU must find the Gear combo that Suits YOU and YOU alone.
If a Dumble is the amp for you... then I'm totally happy for you, no matter what you spent on it..... If its not ( and only you would know) AND you are stupid enough to claim it is.. then your lying to yourself and thats the worst thing anyone can do. musically or otherwise.
NEVER lie to yourself, thats just beyond stupid.`
and in an effort to further explain my reasonsing, I will relate to you a true and verifiable story..
Fyrwyre, Who is a memeber of TGP and one of the owners of Ark Amps. Personaly told me that "The Shark" model amp they built was not one of his favorite models ..
Until he heard me playing Some AC/DC through it. He said that when i play that amp, it suddenly sounded "right" to him and even though He played it himself right afterward... He still said that When I played it the amp sounded more right to him.. Well, I LOVE that little amp... It Does sound right ...For me. and when Bill played it... it sounded fine.. but you could tell that it didn't fit his style comfortablely.. Now thats not a dis, or a comment about His playign ability, because truthfully He is a better player than Myself.
But it does illustrate how one guy can make an amp work FOR him and another guy Can't..

as for marshalls, van halen isn't too buzzy--is he? & all that because i said several instead of tons :hide2 . as for other players making guitars & amps sound better--fully agree. all of us can do this. my strat was very nice, but a friend of mine made it more crystal clear when he played. nobody else made it sound that way when they picked it up. of course he bought it from me. i had it because i was trying to make a strat work for me, but i just play lp's & tele's better. prs' too. my cousin bought a late 60's marshall back in 1988. he was trying to use a dod metal pedal to juice it. now this sounded buzzy. so i messed with the amp during a soundcheck, took the pedal out of his effects, played with the tone controls, & he comes around the corner wondering who was jamming sunshine of your love & white room. i was using my lp with early 80's duncans--those were good pickups. so he uses my lp that night, runs out monday to find some duncans for his guitar, & the amp never saw the dod again. we tried the amp with my 2x12 jbl cab,& he went & found these too. the marshall had that "marshally" click most like to hear when you dig into the strings. & it is a good tone when you turn up a supro or old gibson amp for slide tones :munch

I guess I'll chime in
If guys like em and got the bucks, more power to them. It just seems to me that the Dumble deep, thick, typically delayed tone is the exact opposite of the snap and crunch and chime of a plexi, and I have just about no interest in the Dumble tone and lots of interest in the plexi tone. Different strokes for different folks, but I just have no interest in the Dumble (or clone) tones.
Can someone who doesn't consider them self too hip please tell me what the big deal about Dumble is here?
The tone. Here are two clips of my old Dumble. (The clone crusher.):D (Boss BR600 recorder, Boss DD2 and RV 2 in the Dumbles loop) The best sounding amp for overdrive I have ever owned. Very human vocal like sounds. Almost like there is a built in wah pedal you can control with your pick attack. SOO fine.

SOO fine.

Good post

Great vid-brilliant really! We need a little humor on these bloodied up Dumble threads. I think the video captures quite a few of us who hang out here too much on The Gear Page and listen to lore...Chasing the Wizard...
With that said, If I had the $ I'd own a Dumble just to say I have one-heck I'd own two...I'd play the heck out of them in stereo on Mustang Sally at a dump bar and my buddy, who plays his crappy strat and Fender Deville, would still sound better than me as he's flat-out a better blues player than I.
For most of us, the first four letters of the Dumble name says it all...

I am not sure you are getting my messages, but please help me.
You have some videos that start with file name "dscn*.* etc.

This amp sounds like EL34's rather than 6L6, or do I just have that wrong?
I am having an amp built and I am not rich and need to get it right the first time. Can you please let me know about this amp and soon please.
I am waiting on the builg until I hear from you.
Sure would appreciate that!

While I prefer my Port City Dual 50 (Bassman clone more or less) I can admit that Dumbles sound greatand cut through the mix better than most amps do.
But Howard, or Alexander if you will, must seriously be considering making new amps now. Why wouldnt he?
I know he is very reclusive and hard to deal with, but has anyone actually spoke or seen him lately? What does he do with his time? How does he make money now? I have heard crazy rumors, but what is the man really up to now?

Based on the audio I have heard of other Quinn amps I've no doubt that Shad's build/clone will be a nice sounding amp. That said unless Tag has actually played the finished amp he's jumping the gun a bit here.

That's pretty definitive language for an amp Tag most recently stated he was still awaiting delivery on, estimating completion at 4-6 weeks out. Unless I missed it (and who could - Tag has started a thread for every inbound or just-arrived ODS amp that he's purchased for quite some time now) that amp is still an unknown quantity. Maybe Tag knows time travel as well.
The above quote is PURE HYPE without first-hand experience with the amp in question. Making claims about what it can do for oneself beforehand is one thing. Selling it to another player so definitively without experience AND disclosure is tantamount to shilling.
Maybe Tag knows time travel as well.
Please please please do NOT get Tag started on time travel. Trust me on this.

So true!! It's one thing if you love Dumble, but why the need to bash Marshall?? Never understood that. If I had a Dumble, I'd sell it the same day and get a couple of pristine vintage plexi's and pocket the rest. No question.
I've narrowed it down to your playing styles. If you're a dynamic player who plays with fire, piss and vinegar, like say, Gary Moore, then a Marshall is right for you.
If you prefer to play like a wuss, with a light touch, and favor delicate, jazzy lines instead of playing like a man, then grab a dumble or a clone of one.

If you go to the metroamp forum, they have pretty much dissected the variables in the standard marshall 50w and 100w amps.
I just built my own ceriatone clone, so I ordered some parts and will start tweaking but I've got a good idea of what I want to accomplish. The Marshall amp circuit is so simple and that's a big part of its great base tone. Uncluttered, good tone.
But like you said, "accidental variations" made a difference. EVH had a great one. But I think any GOOD Marshall can be tweaked to be a GREAT Marshall.
The problem I'm having with my 1987 clone is that it needs to loosen up a bit. I've got the higher filtering of the metalface era. So I'm changing out filter caps, get it as low as I can without ghost notes.
Tone stack slope resistors, those were different at different eras, some had a 250pf treble cap, others had a 500pf cap.
Some had a .68 cap on V2a, that gave an upper mid boost. Some had a 300uf cap there, that gave a full range boost, and some had no cap there at all.
Some had a 100k negative feedback resistor, that was gainier and looser. A 47k resistor is tighter and brighter.
But get that right "recipe" and you'll have an incredibly expressive and soulful amp.
Sorry, but the Dumble sound does nothing for me. Too filtered, too compressed, too neutered. I guess it's perfect for jazz or bluezak, but I still like to lean into it and wail.

Too true. I remember PG doing a shoot out with plexi's and the metropark stuff came scary close to the fine vintage piece they used as a benchmark.
When Fender sold to cbs in 65 the engineers quickly made changes to the amps, that Leo had long resisted, to make them more "stable". The result was the reputation of silverface's is far below that of the blackface's. I also remember reading how another famous, highly opinionated amp-maker liked to keep his amps near "the point of instability" because of the harmonics generated were more pleasing and the amps reacted better and faster to a players "touch".
I just feel like Dumble's are too stable for me. I prefer the touch of tweed/marshall/wreck.

As someone who has avoided the D* controversy up to now.. I will just add that all of the clips posted in this thread and many others all have a singing violin type tone.. I find it gorgeous but, not reflective of my playing style or the 'tone in my head'.
I remember reading an old interview with HAD where he said he could draw a Fender AB763 (blackface) circuit from scratch.. that he was so familiar with it that he knew it by heart.
Recording an electric guitar well is an art. It's more than just the player + guitar + amp. The speaker, cab, room, mics, mic placement, pre-amps, EQ, and signal processing are big factors. Much bigger, in my opinion, than a NOS tube or a minor change in resistor/capacitor value in a circuit.

No that would be every amp he's owned for the last 10 years.
perhaps rephrase that....he has not owned an amp for ten years...probably ever....10 months maybe....then it is gone.....then 6 months later he buys another one... Seriously...he's the model customer.... Who else buys that many amps over and over and over and over and over again?

Too true. I remember PG doing a shoot out with plexi's and the metropark stuff came scary close to the fine vintage piece they used as a benchmark.
Yeah, the funny thing about Marshalls is that unlike Fenders, it's hard to nail down exactly what specs went with what years. It's not so cut and dry as saying AB763 or AA763 for Fender. The basic 1959 or 1987 model schematics can be used as benchmarks, but there seems to be some overlapping here and there. I think the Metroamp guys consider the "12 series" to be a pretty good benchmark in tone, those were the super leads with serial number 12XXX or thereabouts. Supposedly EVH's plexi was a 12 series. His power filtering was very low in the preamp section, I'm sure that's why it was so touch-sensitive and slid into distortion so easily.
I'm probably going to end up with a "hybrid" between the smoother plexi and the harder metalface, and use KT66 output tubes, which will confuse that poor amp even more.
