Say I am trying to get a smooth David Gilmour lead fuzz, should I go for the Byoc triangle or rams head version??

Gilmour is known for a Ram's Head.
Go here for all the info you'd ever need on a muff. Scroll down to about halfway for pics of Gilmour's board. It's a V2, aka, ram's head.

Here for Kit testing both versions of the Beaver w/r/t Floyd tones.

I agree on the Ram's Head; i built the kit and i can get some great solo tones with it, despite some minor problems (the 4th preset on the rotary switch doesn't work) which i'm assuming is just a loose joint, that i'll maybe fix sometime. I use the mid boost mode and it sounds great.

Don't forget: true Gilmour soloing has a tube driver in front of the muff.

Would an analogman ts9 silver be a fair replacement for the tube driver seeing as I don't own one?

It would certainly goose it in a way that would get you there, but if you're concerned enough to track down the right model of Muff, it might be worth tracking down the right OD. The TS mid-hump will at the very least help a muff cut through.

The TS9 will color the Muff tone way too much IMO. A modded Boss Blues Driver works better, or a similar OD. Gilmour uses the TD's more like a transparent boost, but not really coloring the Muff tone much. You don't have to use a booster for that sound. It's just a nice add on. Gilmour runs the Muff about 60% sustain, with just a bit of additional drive from the TD. The treble and bass on the TD are set so they don't really alter the Muff tone.

Kit - would any decent transparent drive work for this? Something like a Barber LTD or whatnot?

It also depends on what type of Gilmour lead sound you're looking for. Animals/The Wall era or Division Bell/Pulse era.
If you're going to boost the Muff you want basically want a clean boost. I'm not familiar with the Barber LTD, but anything like an RC booster or even a Boss Super Overdrive or something similar will work. You don't want something like a Tubescreamer because it has a large mid hump. You want something that is fairly transparent, something that just makes your signal louder which adds a hair grit. If you have something other than a Tubescreamer type pedal, turn the Volume on it all the way up, the Gain all the way down and your Tone in the middle or flat. This will give you a a nice clean style boost which should help push you to where you want to go.

realdealblues nailed it. I have not used the Barber LTD either, so not sure about that one, but any Tubescreamer type pedal with that mid hump ruins the Muff tone when you boost with it IMO. The character of the Muff sound will be lost.
Unless that's what you want. Some people like that TS/Muff combo.
That's some excellent Big Muff/Floyd info you put together there, Kit Rae... now bookmarked! :aok
