View Full Version : Refinished my parts-o-caster again! Eat your heart out John Mayer...

Well, this parts-o-caster of mine started out as stained blue, then natural, and now "thin skin" black. I always liked the feel of the 80's MIJ Fender Foto Flame neck profile so I coupled one I found on ebay with a Warmoth one piece alder body, Don Mare (my spec "Josie/Vaughn") pickups, Fender S-1 pot wired for neck/bridge or all 3, Fender pearl button tuners, white moto pickguard, and gold hardware. One can of Stew-Mac black nitro paint is all it took. John Mayer ain't got nothin' on me and my "Blackie" ;).

Sweet guitar Vaugn! I usually do NOT like pearloid pickguards. At ALL. But this one just seems to work right on this guitar. I think it's the perloid buttons. It balances it out.

I love relics but welcome the fact that this one is not.

Great job.

+1. I'm also not usually into gold hardware, but again, it seems to work here! Great job!

I always liked the feel of those MIJ Foto Flame necks too, and had one on my partscaster for several years. As my partscaster has been my main guitar for a long time, eventually I wore through the small frets on it, and decided it was cheaper to purchase another neck than get it refretted (I've been through 4 necks on this guitar). If you ever find yourself in similar circumstances, the Robert Cray model neck is a very nice replacement (the current neck on my partscaster), with a similar thickness/feel to the back, but a little more modern with 9" radius and medium jumbo frets.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone :rotflmao.

I considered relicing it but, somehow, in the flesh, it just looks kinda neat "NOS" in a tuxedo kind of way. But, relicing is still an option....maybe after it gets the first good ding ;).

No prob with that, just take it down to Herb David's on E. Liberty... they'll either rip the strat apart or you off. :hide2

I jest, I jest.

heh... yeah, as much as I want to do the whole "support local businesses" thing Herb David is just a little too pricey. you meet some good people there though.

yeah, a relic job is nice, but now that I think of it I want a relic that comes from years and years of playing it, not necessarily something someone does in a shop...

Ha, Ha...no problem! I have a belt sander and a few car keys around here ready to go into action if/when I feel my Strat needs a little relicing. At my age, I don't think I have enough time left for 100% natural relicing...so I don't think something like 50/50, garage/natural relicing will be cheating too bad ;).

Nah...the guitar is cheezy enough...especially with Stewat-McDonald paint don't you think)? Or should I put a Ronald McDonald or cheesecake decal on the front ;)?

love the black gold and pearloid. Classy. Tux-like. Excellent work. I especially like the flamed neck and black body.

Any issues getting the MIJ Foto Flame to fit the neck pocket of the Warmoth body? I thought I read that MIJ necks sometimes don't sit well in USA bodies.....thoughts?

Oh, and love the build...I'm in the middle of doing a VERY similar partscaster....
