I have used my iPhone for a while, but I borrowed a friends garmin and thought it was much easier than messing with my phone. What do you guys like best? Garmin seems to be a little more expensive, but cheaper to do life time updates. There are some good prices on TomTom's but they seems expensive to do updates with.
What are update options? Do they each just have lifetime updates or can you pay a smaller fee and update every once and a while? How often are updates usually available?
Garmin sucks I did a thread on it.
It will have you get on and off the same highway 10x if it thinks that will save 47 seconds or 343 ft of travel on your trip. You have Mapquest in advance and ignore Garmins advice 1/3 the time so it recalculates.
Wanna buy mine?

Reports from 2 Android users I know say the turn by turn GPS with Text to Voice is fantastic. The one using a Droid got a window mount for it too.
We have a Mio GPS. It's starting to act up taking us on streets with stopsigns every block. Not sure what could be going on since the maps haven't changed since way before it started f'ing up. Just waiting for my Android phone before buying a dedicated unit again.

Mine has 6 route settings from avoiding highways on one end to using the freeway on the other end. Have you tried adjusting your route options?

I can choose fastest travel time or least distance, I have the 1250T. It makes no difference, both suck.

Bummer.
Anyone looking for a new one, check the daily deals websites for refurbished units with lifetime traffic/info. I've seen quite a few nice ones pop up at a really low price. The Yotify is a great site for tracking them. Sends a daily email with a list of whatever you want listed.

Google maps with Navigate on my Droid Incredible works great.
I don't use it all that often, but when I do, it's flawless.
Sucks battery like a Hoover tho...

Is there an Iphone App with audio GPS?
Is there an Iphone App with audio GPS?
Yes but you have to have unlimited data plan for that to be realistic, which I do not and cannot get at this time.

I just use my phone (Blackberry) and Sprint Navigation, which comes as part of my unlimited calling/data plan. 3D moving map and turn by turn voice. I can find addresses, intersections, cities, businesses, etc.
No need for a stand alone GPS. I am very happy with it.
One thing I will add is that you cannot put in a Lat/Long for directions. I've only had a need/want to use it once, so I guess it's no big deal. I would think that is the one thing a stand alone GPS would have an advantage over.

I have one of these also, but will be parting ways with it because it doesnt do waypoint routing. I have tons of preprogrammed motorcycle routes I want to upload to a gps and this one doesnt do it. Great if you are just going point a to point b though

I have a TomTom and hate it. I use my iPhone instead.
My wife has a Garmin nuvi 3750 and loves it. Its the best of the 3 we use.... by far.

I just don't want to mess with my iPhone while driving anymore. It has multi-tasking now, which helps, but if I get a call while I have turns coming up I might miss them. Plus, AT&T has proved to be completely unreliable for stable service while traveling. I think I will prefer to just have a separate device for GPS.
I finally found the info I needed on updating these things. My question is, lets say you've had the GPS for a year or so, how out of date are the maps? I know roads change frequently, but are you going to be completely screwed up while traveling? I would have my iPhone as a back up at least.
also, does anyone have one they wanna sell?

If you go in bush, fishing, hunting, hiking...Garmin GPSmap 60Cx Kick ass GPS, very precise, waterproof, reliable and portable. Just get a topo map.
I use it on the road too. Just change the mapset to a urban map. Great on vacations, walking in cities or business trips.

I'm from a rural community, but I'm not "country" enough to do any of that stuff :crazyguy
but I will be going on a float trip this weekend with the fam...my father and law and myself are using kayaks and everyone else will be in canoes. we all usually use canoes, but we are feeling a little crazy :D
we haven't camped out for a long time, so I hope it's still as fun as it was 10 years ago!

I really am pleased with Android's google maps nav.. has a couple of little bugs that most people won't encounter (ie if I plug the phone into the USB port on my stereo to charge while driving, the voice nav stops working for some reason.. still beeps at you when there is a turn coming up, just no voice guidance), but it is accurate and easy to use even on the fly.

I use GPS Drive on my iPad. I don't like small screens as they are functionally useless for me, which eliminates most of the standalone and smartphone offerings. I have 3G and unlimited data, so I don't get concerned with bandwidth. The only place I've had serious problems was New Hampshire. I live in rural Ohio and must enter West Virginia on occasion, and I've always had coverage when I needed it.
