View Full Version : Does Anyone Gig with just a 1x12 Cab in a Rock Band
Which 1x12 cab do you use on your gigs?
I’m looking around to see if there is 1x12 cab that will work as well as the 2x12 ported cab I have. I want a 1x12 cab that will give me the bigness, presence and punch, that will work as good as the 2x12 cab I use for Classic Rock through modern rock for gigs.
The 1x12 cab I have right now is pretty good, but it lacks the presence and punch of the 2x12 I use.
I’m really interested in finding out who actually uses a 1x12 cab live for Rock type gigs.
Thanks

I have a Trutone 1X12 cabinet that I use for rock gigs. Nothing heavier than Velvet Revolver but with a good PA it's all I'd ever need.

I've only played through a handful of 1x12s in a rock (kind of pop rock, not heavy rock) setting. I could list the ones I have used and prefer... but you specifically don't want that.
So onto my second point: no 1x12 is going to sound as good as a 2x12. If you go into it with the expectation that you can find a 1x12 that does, you are never going to be happy.

Maybe I didn't say it clearly in my first post...I edited that out...Sorry for the confusion.
Which 1 x12 cabs have you used in your Pop/Rock band and which one, ones were your favorite?

I have an Egnater 1X12 that is ported that sounds pretty big to me even compared to my Egnater 2X12. I have a Super V loaded in there now but I think I like the stock E80 better.

I have a Tony Bruno-built 1x12, dressed up to look like a mini-Marshall cab, with a Celestion "Hendrix" speaker in it, and with a mic in front of it into a decent PA, just kills. I'd put it up against any 2x12 in that context. Without the benefit of a PA, of course there are some multiple speaker cabs that would sound "better."
Keep in mind that the wood makes a difference. Good pine, for instance, is very resonant, and that resonance translates into an added sense of sound dispersal. I have two Louis Electric 1x12 combos with old pine used for the cabs, and they sound HUGE. Also, how open the backs are, how the openings are shaped and placed and types of speakers all can play a role.
All the best on your quest.

I use this Mesa as an extension with combos. Sometimes I just run the cabinet by itself. I like it a lot. As to a 1 x 12 never sounding as good as a 2 x 12 :bonk

I've used mesa 1x12 3/4 back cabs live with success in a rock format. Very big-sounding and very light.

I bet you could use a Matchless SC30, damn those amps are loud.
I use a Mesa Express 5:50 by itself 90% of the time. I have a couple different cabs if need be.

I gig with a Morgan 1x12 cab and it sounds big. My amp is mic'd every gig though.
I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned the Port City 1X12 OS.
I was under the impression that this cab was made to Rock out, or am I wrong?

I have used my Avatar Vintage 1x12 in my power trio many times. I was mic'd but the sound still rocked. Plenty of stage volume for the gig. I love these 1x12 cabs. Yes, more speakers will sound fuller and louder but for my purposes these Avatar Vintage 1x12's sound great and are very portable.

I use a 1x12 Suhr cab and it sounds huge - lots of oomph and presence, it is ported as well; I use it in mic'ed and un-mic'ed in small clubs, theaters, and outdoor gigs. Great sounding box.

I sometimes use a Custom Audio 1x12 cab with a EVM 12L, plenty of punch and when mic'd makes no difference thru p.a., can handle a 100 watt Marshall no problem.

Hell yes, all I play anymore is 1x12s. Every gig I've done in the last 3 years has been using a 1x12 cab and in the last 5 years, I did a handful with my VT-40 or 4x10 cab, but other than those, all gigs were with 1x12s. I can't really get away with more volume on stage than I get from a 1x12. More than anything else, I've used my ~35W Magic Z II and Herritage Colonial, but have also used an Ampeg Gemini 1, Magnatone 213 and home-brew and most recently an Ampeg Reverbojet / Gemini type home-brew.

I've tried it with "good" evm12L-eqipped Thiele cabs, etc, but I like at least two 2x12's these days since we're a loud 2 piece band.

As an experiment, I used an Orange Dual Terror and a 1x12 thiele cab (Eminence Delta Pro 12a) for a doom metal gig a few weeks ago. I had a back up ready in case the sound just wasn't loud enough. I mean... after all... it's doom metal!

The sound level and tone was perfect. People in the audience said my volume on par with my bandmate who uses a 4x12.
Without the club's PA, I probably would have had to resort to plan B.

The z best cabs sound great. A buddy of mine plays a maz 18 through a 1 x 12 with a alnico gold and it sounds great. Plenty of low end and punch.

i've been using 1x12's for many years due to a bad back.
i put some in my monitor on real big stages, but most of the time it's not needed.
i have a bogner cube w/can rex, a bogner open back w/celestion g12h30 ann. and a kerry wright ultra light w/celestion blue.
i probably use the cab with the g12h30 the most.
