OK, I guess I really oughta know this but I don't.

If you want to run output from both L and R sides of a stereo receiver into a single speaker, it it kosher to combine red(L, R) and black(L, R) wires to combine the channels ?

(It's actually for a friend who is putting in a pool and wants to put a single speaker underwater.)

There are electronic boxes you can buy that will combine the 2 signals then you can feed them into a mono amp then to a single speaker. IOW, too much trouble.

Sounds like a good formula to let all the magic smoke out.

Many receivers have a control to go into mono mode (do the mixing internally) - then you simply use one speaker output.

Just use an adapter to sum the source material to mono, go into one channel of an amp, out the same channel. Underwater, you say?
