I've been running a Warehouse Green Beret (Greenback clone) in my Winfield Cyclone for the past 2 weeks. It sounds really good, but it's been lacking "what I'm used to" in AC15/AC30 voiced amps and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Well, today I swapped out the Green Beret with a Weber Alnico Silver Bell and fired 'er up. That was what I've been missing! Not sure if it's the "Alnico-ness" or the voicing of the speaker, but it's more 3-D for lack of a better description. Still has plenty of low end, but now it has a very glassy top end that sounds really nice and much more "chimey" than with the Green Beret. Last weekend, I had to really crank the tone and cut to get the top end high enough for me, but with the Silver Bell I could actually dial it back some and still be "more" than the Green Beret.

When I originally got this Silver Bell, I was going to send it in and have it re-coned to a Weber Blue..... I think I'll play a few shows with it like it is first.. I really like what I'm hearing.

So the moral.... If you want your AC15/30 voiced amp to sound "chimer" and fuller and more AC15/30-ish, use an AlNiCo speaker. The Green Back type speaker is nice, but just not 100% there (for me). ;)

Interesting.

I've got a homebrew Lightning 15, not a far cry from your Cyclone. This weekend, I'll be swapping out the Carvin g12 I've been using for a ceramic Blue Dog (8ohm, 50w), which I chose over the alnico because I'm looking for later breakup and don't need any more compression at stage volume.

Of course, I won't know the full story for a few weeks, but I'll post some initial impressions after the weekend. Glad you found your sound. :aok

This thread is almost literally music to my ears - am having an Alnico Silver Bell delivered tomorrow! It's going into my ac30, replacing a g12h30 to sit side by side with an alnico blue dog. You're right about the Alnico. It's just right for ac30 style amps.

Ya know..... My favorite cab I've ever owned was a Dr. Z 2x12 open back with Webers - an Alnico Blue and Alnico Sivler Bell. That cab just sounded awesome!!

To quote Ted Nugent's most prolific comment during last weeks concert.

"NO SHIT".

LOVE the Silver Bell..............

I have one in a /13 SJT 10/20 and I like it better than the Celestion Gold I tried in it.

Just an update.... I still LOVE the Silver Bell and this is an observation. When doing higher up leads with overdrive or distortion on, the Greenback speaker is a little smoother... I think that's why I like the Silver Bell though, not quite as "nice" (in a good way). On cleans, the Silver Bell seems to cut through better on the higher up leads.

I replaced a blown Blue Dog with an alnico SB. I wished I'd done it sooner. So much more definition.

Love the 50w Silver Bell. Mine's ceramic.
I use several speakers, and keep coming back to it.
