I've been running a Warehouse Green Beret (Greenback clone) in my Winfield Cyclone for the past 2 weeks. It sounds really good, but it's been lacking "what I'm used to" in AC15/AC30 voiced amps and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Well, today I swapped out the Green Beret with a Weber Alnico Silver Bell and fired 'er up. That was what I've been missing! Not sure if it's the "Alnico-ness" or the voicing of the speaker, but it's more 3-D for lack of a better description. Still has plenty of low end, but now it has a very glassy top end that sounds really nice and much more "chimey" than with the Green Beret. Last weekend, I had to really crank the tone and cut to get the top end high enough for me, but with the Silver Bell I could actually dial it back some and still be "more" than the Green Beret.
When I originally got this Silver Bell, I was going to send it in and have it re-coned to a Weber Blue..... I think I'll play a few shows with it like it is first.. I really like what I'm hearing.
So the moral.... If you want your AC15/30 voiced amp to sound "chimer" and fuller and more AC15/30-ish, use an AlNiCo speaker. The Green Back type speaker is nice, but just not 100% there (for me). ;)
