Basically it's just a dulled finish.

I prefered the McCarty.
Better clarity and ring. The R8 sounded a bit dull in comparison.
Of coarse, the scale and bridge are diff on both guitars which contributes greatly.

Right. I think the PRS might have hotter pickups too. The Les Paul has something happeing in the low mids as well.

I dig the Les Paul. It's sounds more complex to me. More "interesting"

i agree totally with you ,,,
McCart sounds a bit wamer and fuzzier. The LP sounded brighter, more cut but not as round. Not a fan of the amp setting. Certainly wasn't selling me on the Z. I would have a/b'd it on a pure clean and then a much thicker OD.

bridge different, yes ... but i think he is playing a ted mccarty limited edition DC 245, so the scale length is essentially identical, no?

Same scale length, number of frets....57/08's are 8K on the output. McCarty sounds better! :boxer

How is he dialed in on the amp and on both guitars? A certain setting on an amp will make different guitars sound better or worse. At first I preferred the PRS, but after a bit I liked how the Les Paul seemed to be a little more "alive"?? I don't know if that is the word for it, but I liked the Les Paul the most in the end.
Thank goodness because I didn't want to have to buy a PRS.

I liked the LP better too. Plus no chance to blend the pups on the McCarty. I thought the McCarty sounded and looked good though I never quite bonded with the one I had.

I prefer the PRS by a small margin. I think the recording was quite bad. None of the tones really did it for me. Is this what they mean when they say "boxy"?
Frankly, I find the tone difference to be negligible in practical settings.

Yeah, that's true. But it provided a brief moment of amusement. That's what I live for!

I believe the 245 is a 24.5" scale where as the R8 is 24.75".

the "negligible" differences in gear are what most of us here live for!
I used a little Zoom q3. The video on those sux, but the audio is usually pretty accurate--better than any handheld I have used....

They sound slightly different to me, but close enough that playability would be the dealmaker. I am a bit underwhelmed by the Z, though. Maybe it's the just the camera micing or some other variable, but the Buddy Whittington clips that have recently been posted sound FAR superior to me (playing aside, of course.). Those clips of Buddy with the SB Gibbo semi are just wonderful - what tone!

I own an R9 and a Ted DC245. They are very close. I think the LP may just barely edge it out in girth of tone, but for playability and quality- the PRS all day long.
To my ears, the difference was the mids, McCarty had more, Les Paul sounded fatter.
The little amp needed to be dimed to get the live performance sound. The r8 was alittle tighter with some kerrang coming through. With more power, and in a louder setting, that would show even more.
