Thinking of buying an Alnico to pair with a G12-65 in a 2x12.

I wonder if anyone has had good results trying this.

I do it all the time. I have a 212 with an AlNiCo Tone Tubby and a ceramic Tone Tubby and love the thing. I used to have one with a Celestion Blue and G12H30 and loved that combination too. Then there's the Red Fang with a Private Jack or a Cannibis Rex...

I use a 1959 P12N and a 60, Vibratone cerimic in my 60,s pro reverb and it sounds just great, nice and clean and gives a real nice smooth distortion tone when driven hard or when a OD pedal is kicked in.

Yep, the combo tends to work well - the alnico gives you the grind and crang, the ceramic gives you definition and clarity.

I have a Blue Alnico paired with a Heritage Greenback 55 Hz...love that combo.

I am planning on do this for my Vox Ac50. Currently running 2 Celestion anni G12H30's. I have a scumico on the way. I plan to mix that with the G12H30 to start with and will probably end up with an H75/Scumico mix...

In addition to the other great combos mentioned, I like a P12N mixed with a C12K. Great combination.

+1 - I use a Tone Tubby with a G12H30 and it's a rockin' combo ... full bodied, round, but overdrives very nicely for rock.

The TT Alnico/Ceramic combo is awesome with the right head.

That combo doesn't work well with all amps so... Bassman, Vibrolux, Super reverb circuits is where those seem to shine best..NOT a good combo for D circuits.

I plan on adding an Alnico to the 2x12 that I use with my Kinglsey Tonebaron. It has G12-65s now.

Thanks for the replies

I use a Gold and a Vintage 30 in a 2x12" with a Marshall voiced head (Reinhardt Storm) and it sounds really good to me.

Our Vox runs through a 2 x 12 with a 50 watt Weber Blue ceramic and an Emi Red Fang. That is a nice sounding cab.
But you are only talking about magnet material, not mixing fire and gasoline......
The speakers don't care.

There are a few builders who love the G12H30/ Blue combo for their amps. %13, Dr. Z, 65 and Morgan to name a few. These are all builders who love the delicate balance of VOX & Marshall voicings. Alnico= VOX chime and Ceramic= Marshall grind.

Yup. I learned this the hard way. A TT Alnico and a Ceramic in a halfback Mesa cab was very meh with my Eric Gales. And I love my TTs

One of my very favorite cabs is a Scumback/Scumnico mix in a Southbay convertible 2x12 cab. That cab works fine with D style amps...

This could've been the difference in cab, or it could have something do do with the speakers.

My favorite cab (made by TT) used to have a celestion Gold/G12H mix, now replaced with a Scumnico/Scumback H75 mix. Love it!

Lots of high end builders and players use alnico's mixed with non-alnico speakers. Lots of possobilities can be created that way. Its a great way to get the character of both speakers at once.

Im building my own cab next week and have a Emi Red Fang and Wizard goin in it. It should sound killer with my AC15C1.

I personally don't care for mixing speakers, unless maybe in a 4x10 or 4x12, where you can get a more natural sounding balance/mix. I use to do this for a while in a 2x12 and I hated how my tone changed when I moved around on stage from left to right. There will also never be the same sweet spot for different speakers, so i.e. treble will have to be set at a compromise that works for both speakers. It sounds good on paper and I do see why people do it I guess, but personally I did not care for it.

I have an Emi Red Fang and Scumback H55 paired up in a divided 2x12, with one half open-back, the other closed. To my ears they compliment each other very well.

yep I would agree with this and add punch to the ceramic description...when you find the right mix the sum total actually sounds better than the individual parts...when I isolate the indivual speakers it does not sound as good as the mix of both speakers...

in my case its a Fane Alnico 12" and a 10" Weber Ceramic Blue Pup...the combo is just amazing...I would mic both live...

Will the Tone-Tubby H-Bomb mix work in a closed back cab? I have been told that the TT's work best in a open back.

I've done this many times, always with great results...

Fane AXA12 + EVM-12L
Gold + G12-65
Fane or Gold + Scholz

I don't have those speakers anymore. My current setup is a 100W WGS BlackHawk AlNiCo + EV SRO/12L Ceramic. I also pair my EV SRO/12 AlNiCo with the SRO/12L. These combinations are the best of any I've tried so far. I also have an EVM-10M, EVM-10L, both of which sound great paired with a Fane AXA10 AlNiCo (100W 10").

Although I tried most of those combinations in a 2-12, my current setup is a stack with the BlackHawk in the Forte 3D cab on top, and the EV SRO/12L in a TRM finger jointed Pine Thiele. I prefer purpose built 1-12s to a 2-12...

Great, this is for my Kingsley Tonebaron , so...

I have a couple Celestion G12-65s, and I like them quite a bit better for this amp than the ASW KT-70s I had. Don't get me wrong, I played the ASW's with other amps, but the G12-65s just bring out the sweetness in the Tonebaron. Why do you prefer the EVs over the G12-65s?

As far as the Ceramic/Alnico pairing,Count me in.

I have a ceramic SRO paired with an Alnico SRO,and an EV 12L paired with an Alnico SRO. Superb..
All depends on what you want as a final product, of course.

That's my Tone Baron on top in my pic! The EVs don't give any speaker breakup - they just deliver the message! I liked both cleans and OD better with EVs vs 12-65s. With cleans the 2 speakers are somewhat close, but with OD, the EV's character is more to my liking. It's a matter of taste of course.

Great info, thanks. I liked the EVs I had in a Carol Ann cab back when I owned the OD2-100. Did a little search for EV SROs. Wow, they are hard to come by. Nothing sold on EBAY in months. One junky one is up there now.

You can find SROs on eBay from time to time. The SRO/12 is the AlNiCo, 'Coffee Can' version, and the SRO/12L is the Ceramic version, which eventually evolved into the EVM-12L.

I actually have a alnico hemp with a 65 in a d style 2/12 with my Quinn Sdo and it really brought out the roar without loosing low end!
like billion81 said most might not like it in a d circuit but I was looking to take some of the smoothnes out and Marshall it a bit
