Wow...20 years. I remember the day clearly. I almost went to that show but decided not to because of work. The next day I heard the news, put my head on the table for a while and left the job. I called my buddy who went to the show and we hooked up for several rounds at the bar.

R.I.P. Stevie. One of the greats. I remember what I was doing when I first heard. That day sucked.

In my head, he was the best guitarist to ever rock the face of the earth.

I was listening to bluesville and they played his " Ain't gonna give up on Love" - just beautiful playing and also many people over look his vocal ability. He had some wicked pipes IMO. RIP SRV!

Saw him for the first, and only, time on July 12, 1990. I was 15, and SRV was my idol. He was gone just a few weeks later. Still think of him every day...

I thought it was tomorrow. Either way, I too remember hearing the news. It was like hearing about the loss of a friend. He was just coming into his own too at that time.

RIP Brother Stevie, we miss you still!!

I'll never forget that day.... There for a while it seemed that there was a chance that Clapton was aboard that same flight. I get a little sad every time I hear his music and cant help but wonder what kinda stuff he'd be putting out these days.

It would be interesting to know who inspired more awful imitators SRV or EVH?

Both are great players but I can't listen to either because the imitators have ruined them for me.

RIP Stevie.

i pulled my car out of traffic, stopped, and cried that day. i remember exactly where i was, coming home from college classes, it was after they confirmed it was SRV and not CLapton.

RIP Stevie, you were more than just a guitar influence :(:bow:love:

My favorite guitar player of all-time. Constantly finding new ways to express himself even though he was playing the same songs for the millionth time. That is mightily impressive in and of itself.

I miss him dearly. Never got a chance to see him play. Listening to stuff from all of his albums yesterday. His playing never gets old.

I saw SRV live at my college campus in the spring of 1984. I was front row center and deaf for a few days afterward. Amazing show!

I remember being saddened the days Wes, Jimi, Stevie, and Dimebag died. For some reason I took it more personally than any other well known individuals/musicians who have passed away. They were all guitar heros to me in the best sense of the word and always will be.

Peaceful rest Stevie, you are still with us.

I remember hearing the news on the radio on the way home from a gig. The weird thing was that night when we played "Comfortably Numb" (I always took a longer ride out solo on that) I just went into a zone like I never had before and really haven't since and played my ass off. When we finished our bassist looked at me in amazement and said "what the ****?!". It was the last song of the set and I had go sit down outside and collect myself. On the way home that night when I heard he had died I couldn't help but tie the 2 events together. A disturbance in the force? A assistance to an otherwise shitty player on his way out? It was very strange.

As stated in previous SRV discussions, I had the life altering expirience of sitting top dead center front row here in Fort Worth in 1983 and got my mind blown by Stevie. It changed my entire approach to music and to guitar. I have never witnessed a more intensly devoted musician in person. His incredible influence on so many of us is a testament to how Stevie MOVED people. He was quite simply a channel of music from a very deep place that not everyone gets to. He was a master guitar player, so powerful and committed to what he played that he has left other professional musicians in awe of his power.

I have had the good fortune to meeting many people who knew him on a very personal level and he was what he was. I am so very happy that he came along during my lifetime and had the drive and committment to share his soul with us all. The loss to the Vaughan family is so tragic. They lost a brother and a son that was a GIANT in his own time. Should anyone who reads this thread have a chance to see Martha or Jimmie this weekend, give them both a huge hug from a forever grateful stranger.

RIP SRV

Such a great talent. He impacted my life and I never met the man. Thats true power.

Here's a good quote from SRV that I found:

Ya know, right now the most important thing in my life is to make sure you understand that, first of all I thank God I'm alive today, and I mean that. I spent too many years of my life thinking that the big party was the whole thing.

I took a guitar to The UPS Store this morning to weigh it and I have a nice rapport with the ladies working there. The lady that ships my guitars said they had a cd to give me because no one there cared for it so I said ok thinking it would be something I wouldn't care for either. She handed it to me and it turned out to be "Family Style". Thought about getting it from time to time but never got around to it. Now it's a done deal.

Kinda' weird happenstance considering SRV's death anniversary. RIP Stevie

I just got tickets to the "Experience Hendrix Tour" coming this fall and it got me to thinking, I wonder if there would be an interest in something similar for SRV. Get some of the great guitarists that were influenced by Stevie and taking it on the road. His band Double Trouble is on the Hendrix tour, I'm sure they would love to do the same for Stevie. Jimmie V would have to be a big part of it, and I'm sure they could fill the bill with some other great talent. After 20 years, maybe it's time to do something like this. Not as a big money maker, but for SRV fans and younger fans that never got to see him. Just a thought.

RIP Stevie. I remember that day fairly well. I was 15.

Anyone else having a hard time contemplating that the early 90's were 20 years ago?

It was the day before I turned 23, and yes it's hard to believe it was 20 years ago.

I had the good fortune of seeing him when Couldn't Stand the Weather was released. The man absolutely radiated emotion and intensity. The sense of connection with the audience and the outpouring of soul out through the guitar was awe-inspiring.

I recall taking my then-girlfriend, now-wife to the show. She wasn't particularly interested initially, but left the concert a convert. "Pride and Joy" became "our song" after that. Since the accident, to this day, she'll tear up a little when we hear his music. Gone, but never forgotten.

RIP Stevie

I saw him at the 1990 New Orleans Jazz Fest and he was amazing. Didn't pick my guitar for around a week after that! Died way too soon.

I was in college in the 80's at University of Texas. We would go down to 6th street and see Stevie wail at Antone's. My roomate brought a recording of Mary Had a Little Lamb home one day. I had never heard of SRV at that point. As soon as I heard it, we went to Antones that night and saw him. He converted me instantly to rockin blues. I remember the day he died like it was yesterday. Saw it on the news and was saddened. SRV is on my ipod and is with me every time I ride my bike. He also serenades me in the shop quite often too. Gone but never forgotten. RIP Stevie!
